叔琮壯勇沈毅，膽力過人。 Shucong was burly, brave, and steady; none matched his nerve.

太祖討巢、蔡於陳、許間，叔琮奮擊，首出諸校，太祖壯之，自行伍間擢為後院馬軍都將。 Fighting Huang Chao and Qin Zongquan between Chen and Xu, Shucong led the charge; the Founder pulled him from the ranks to command the rear-guard cavalry.

時東伐徐、鄆，多曆年所，叔琮身當矢石，奮不顧命，觀者許焉。 Years of war in Xu and Yan saw Shucong take every blow without flinching; men who watched approved.

太祖伐襄陽，叔琮失利，降為陽翟鎮遏使； After a defeat at Xiangyang the Founder reduced him to frontier commissioner at Yangzhai;

天復元年春，領大軍攻拔澤、潞，叔琮遂引兵北掠太原。 Spring of Tianfu 1, the great army took Ze and Lu; Shucong marched north to raid Taiyuan.

晉軍恃勝攻臨汾，叔琮嚴設備禦。 Emboldened by victory, the Jin army moved on Linfen; Shucong fortified every approach.

時太祖遣朱友寧將兵數萬赴應，悉委叔琮節制。 The Founder sent Zhu Youning with an army of tens of thousands and gave Shucong full command.

既至，諸將皆欲休軍，叔琮曰：「若然，則賊必遁矣，遁則何功焉！」 Once there, every general wanted rest; Shucong said, "Do that and they will run—and what glory is there in that?"

太祖聞之，喜謂左右曰：「殺蕃賊，破太原，非氏老不可！」 When word reached the Founder he told his staff, "To kill these barbarians and break Taiyuan we need none but Old Shi!"

叔琮乃長驅收汾州，與晉人轉戰，直抵並壘。 Shucong drove on to recover Fenzhou, traded blows with the Jin all the way to the walls of Bing.

叔琮養士愛民，甚有能政。 Shucong kept good men close and cared for the people; his rule was capable.

及昭宗東遷，征為右龍虎統軍，以衛洛陽。 When Zhaozong moved east, Shucong was called to guard Luoyang as commander of the Right Dragon-Tiger Guard.

叔琮將死，呼曰：「賣我性命，欲塞天下之謗，其如神理何！」 Facing death Shucong cried, "You sell my life to silence the world—what of heaven's judgment!"

尋與氏叔琮同受太祖密旨，弑昭宗於洛陽宮。 Soon he and Shi Shucong, on the same secret order, killed Zhaozong in the Luoyang palace.

既而太祖自河中至，責以慢於軍政，貶崖州司戶，復其本姓名，與氏叔琮同日賜死。 When the Founder came from Hezhong he accused Yougong of negligence, stripped him to registrar at Yazhou, restored the name Li Yanwei, and had him executed the same day as Shucong.

太祖初起兵，珍與龐師古、許唐、李暉、丁會、氏叔琮、鄧季筠、王武等八十餘人，以中涓從，摧堅陷陣，所向蕩決。 When the Founder first took up arms, Zhen and more than eighty comrades—including Pang Shigu, Xu Tang, Li Hui, Ding Hui, Shi Shucong, Deng Jiyun, and Wang Wu—rode at his side and broke every line they met.

史臣曰：叔琮而下，咸以鷹犬之才，適遇雲龍之會，勤勞王室，踐履將壇，然俱不得其死，豈不惜哉！ The historian writes: From Shuzong on, these men had the talent of hawks and hounds and met a dragon in the clouds; they toiled for the throne and stood on the general's dais—yet none died in his bed. How pitiable!

語曰：「弑父與君，亦不從也」，而叔琮、友恭從之，何也？ The Analects says, "One must not obey even a father or lord in murder"—yet Shuzong and Yougong obeyed. Why?

五月，氏叔琮引退，嗣昭以精騎追之，汴軍委棄輜重兵仗萬計。 In the fifth month Shi Shuzong pulled back. Sizhao pursued with picked cavalry, and the Bian abandoned tens of thousands of items of baggage, equipment, and arms.

十八日，汴將朱友寧、氏叔琮將兵十萬來拒。 On the eighteenth the Bian generals Zhu Youning and Shi Shuzong arrived with one hundred thousand men to block him.

翌日，氏叔琮犯德威之營，汴軍十餘萬列陣四合，德威、嗣昭血戰解之，乃保軍而退，汴軍因乘之。 The next day Shi Shuzong attacked Dewei's camp. More than one hundred thousand Bian troops closed in from every side. Dewei and Sizhao fought their way out in a bloody engagement and covered the army's retreat, but the Bian pressed hard in pursuit.

氏叔琮 Shi Shucong

氏叔琮，開封尉氏人也。 Shi Shucong came from Weishi in Kaifeng prefecture.

為梁騎兵伍長，梁兵擊黃巢陳、許間，叔琮戰數有功，太祖壯之，使將後院馬軍，從攻徐、兗，表宿州刺史。 He began as a squad leader in Liang cavalry. In the campaigns against Huang Chao between Chen and Xu he fought again and again with credit. Liang Taizu Zhu Wen took him for a hard man and put him over the rear-court horse guard; on the drive against Xu and Yan he was named prefect of Su.

太祖下河中，取晉、絳，晉王遣使致書太祖求成，太祖以晉書詞嫚，乃遣叔琮與賀德倫等攻之。 The Founder marched on Hezhong and seized Jin and Jiang. Li Keyong sent envoys with a letter asking for peace. Zhu Wen read insolence in the wording and sent Shucong, He Delun, and others against him.

叔琮自太行入，取澤、潞，出石會，營於洞渦，久之糧盡，乃旋。 Shucong came in through the Taihang, took Ze and Lu, emerged at Shihui Pass, and made camp at Dongwo. Supplies gave out; after a long stand he turned back.

晉人復取絳州，攻臨汾，叔琮選壯士二人深目而胡須者，牧馬襄陵道旁，晉人以為晉兵，雜行道中，伺其怠，擒晉二人而歸。 Jin retook Jiang and pushed on Linfen. Shucong picked two tough soldiers with deep eyes and barbarian beards and pastured horses along the Xiangling road. The Jin took them for their own men in the column. He waited for slackness, grabbed two Jin soldiers, and rode home.

太祖遣友寧兵萬人會叔琮禦晉，友寧欲休兵以待，叔琮曰：「敵聞救至必走，走則何功邪？」 The Founder sent Zhu Youning with ten thousand men to reinforce Shucong against Jin. Youning wanted to halt and wait. Shucong said: “The moment they hear relief is here they will bolt. If they bolt, what is left for us to win?”

太祖大喜曰：「破太原非氏老不可。」 The Founder exulted: “Only old Shi can take Taiyuan.”

已而兵大疫，叔琮班師，令曰：「病不能行者焚之。」 Then plague swept the host. Shucong ordered the retreat and proclaimed: “Any man too sick to walk will be burned alive.”

昭宗遷洛，拜右龍武統軍。 When Emperor Zhaozong moved to Luoyang, Shucong became right Dragon Martial commander.

太祖遣叔琮與李彥威等弒昭宗，已而殺之。 The Founder sent Shucong and Li Yanwei to murder Zhaozong—and afterward had them killed.
