哀帝初嗣位，柳璨用事，全忠嘗奏用牙將張廷範為太常卿，諸相議，樞曰：「廷範勛臣，幸有方鎮節鉞之命，何藉樂卿？ When Emperor Aidi first took the throne, Liu Can was in power. Quanzhong once recommended his military officer Zhang Tingfan as director of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices. The chief ministers deliberated, and Shu said, 'Tingfan is a meritorious officer who may yet receive a regional command—why does he need the directorship of the Court of Sacrifices?

初，梁祖欲以張廷範為太常卿，裴樞以為不可。 At first the Liang Founder wished to name Zhang Tingfan Minister of Ceremonies; Pei Shu opposed it.

楷因附璨，復依廷範。 Kai attached himself to Can and again relied on Tingfan.

時有司初定昭宗諡號，楷謂廷範曰：「諡者所以表行實，前有司之諡先帝為昭宗，所謂名實不副。 When the proper offices first fixed Zhaozong's posthumous title, Kai told Tingfan, "A posthumous name should reflect true conduct; to call the late emperor Zhaozong is a mismatch of name and reality.

司空為樂卿，餘忝史職，典章有失，安得不言。」 The Minister of Works oversees music; I hold a historian's post—when ritual law errs, how can I remain silent?"

太常卿張廷範奏議曰：「昭宗初實彰於聖德，後漸減於休明，致季述幽辱於前，茂貞劫幸於後，雖數拘厄運，亦道失始終。 Minister of Ceremonies Zhang Tingfan submitted: "Zhaozong at first showed true sagely virtue, but later his glory faded; Jishu kept him captive and Maozhen seized the imperial progress—though ill fortune pressed him repeatedly, he also lost the Way from first to last.

初，唐天祐三年，梁王欲以嬖吏張廷範為太常卿，唐宰相裴樞以謂太常卿唐常以清流為之，廷範乃梁客將，不可。 In Tang’s third Tianyou year the Prince of Liang wanted his favorite Zhang Tingfan as Grand Master of Splendid Happiness; Chief Minister Pei Shu said that post belonged to the pure stream, not a Liang guest-general.

及昭宗遇弒，唐政出於梁，楷為起居郎，與柳璨、張廷範等相結，因謂廷範曰：「夫謚者，所以易名而貴信也。 When Zhaozong was murdered and Liang held Tang’s government, Kai was Diarist and joined Liu Can and Zhang Tingfan; he told Tingfan, “A posthumous title should honor truth.

而廷範本梁客將，嘗求太常卿不得者，廷範亦以此怨唐，因下楷疏廷範，廷範議曰：「臣聞執事堅固之謂恭，亂而不損之謂靈，武而不遂之謂莊，在國逢難之謂閔，因事有功之謂襄，請改謚昭宗皇帝曰恭靈莊閔皇帝，廟號襄宗。」 Tingfan, a Liang guest-general who had failed to win that post, resented Tang; he received Kai’s memorial and proposed: “I have heard that steadfast conduct is Gong, undamaged in disorder Ling, martial yet incomplete Zhuang, meeting national hardship Min, merit through events Xiang—I beg the posthumous title of Emperor Zhaozong be changed to Emperor Gong-Ling-Zhuang-Min, temple name Xiangzong.”

太祖至洛，流彥威、叔琮嶺南，使張廷範殺之。 At Luoyang he banished Yanwei and Shucong to the far south and sent Zhang Tingfan to kill them.

顧廷範曰：「勉之，公行自及。」 He stared at Tingfan: “Hurry along. Your turn is next.”

循與蔣玄暉、張廷範等共與弒昭宗之謀，其後循與玄暉有隙，哀帝即位，將有事於南郊，循因與王殷讒於太祖曰：「玄暉私侍何太后，與廷範等奉天子郊天，冀延唐祚。」 Xun had helped Jiang Xuanhui, Zhang Tingfan, and the rest murder Zhaozong, then quarreled with Xuanhui. Emperor Ai was preparing the southern suburban sacrifice when Xun and Wang Yin told Taizu: “Xuanhui is sleeping with Empress Dowager He. He and Tingfan mean to march the emperor to the altar and keep Tang alive.”

太祖遣循與王殷弒何皇后，因殺璨及玄暉、廷範等，以循為樞密副使。 Taizu sent Xun and Wang Yin to kill Empress Dowager He, then executed Can, Xuanhui, Tingfan, and the others, and made Xun deputy commissioner of the Palace Secretariat.

殷乃誣玄暉嘗私侍太后，太祖斬玄暉及張廷範、柳璨等，遣殷弒太后於積善宮。 Yin then claimed Xuanhui had bedded the empress dowager. Taizu killed Xuanhui, Zhang Tingfan, Liu Can, and the rest, and sent Yin to murder the empress dowager at Jishan Palace.
