聖宗一 Shengzong, Part One

聖宗文武大孝宣皇帝，諱隆緒，小字文殊奴。 The Emperor Shengzong, posthumous title Wenwu Daxiao Xuan, personal name Longxu, childhood name Wenshunu.

帝幼喜書翰，十歲能詩。 As a boy the Emperor delighted in letters and brushwork; by ten he could write verse.

乾亨二年，封梁王。 In the second year of Qianheng he received the title Prince of Liang.

癸丑，即皇帝位於柩前，時年十二。 On guichou day he assumed the throne before the coffin; he was twelve years old.

冬十月己未朔，帝始臨朝。 In winter, on the jiwei new moon of the tenth month, the Emperor held his first audience.

辛酉，群臣上尊號曰昭聖皇帝，尊皇后為皇太后，大赦。 On xinyou day the hundred officials offered the honorific title Emperor Zhaosheng, the Empress was honored as Empress Dowager, and a general amnesty was proclaimed.

己丑，如顯州。 On jichou day the Emperor went to Xian Prefecture.

上與皇太后因為書附上大行。 The Emperor and the Empress Dowager each wrote a letter and placed it with the late emperor's coffin.

辛未，有司請以帝生日為千齡節，從之。 On xinwei day the authorities petitioned to designate the Emperor's birthday as the Thousand-Age Festival, and the request was granted.

丙子，如老翁川。 On bingzi day the Emperor went to Old Man River.

上將征高麗，親閱東京留守耶律末只所總兵馬。 Preparing to campaign against Goryeo, the Emperor personally inspected the forces under Eastern Capital regent Yelü Mojie.

庚辰，上與皇太后祭乾陵，下詔諭三京左右相、左右平章事、副留守判官、諸道節度使判官、諸軍事判官、錄事參軍等，當執公方，毋得阿順。 On gengchen day the Emperor and Empress Dowager sacrificed at Qian Mausoleum and issued an edict to the chancellors, vice-regents, circuit and army staff, and recording secretaries of the three capitals, directing them to govern with impartial integrity and not to flatter and yield.

十二月壬午朔，謁凝神殿，遣使分祭諸陵，賜守殿官屬酒。 On the renwu new moon of the twelfth month the Emperor visited Ningshen Hall, sent envoys to offer sacrifice at the various mausoleums, and granted wine to the officials who guarded the halls.

是日，幸顯州。 That day the Emperor visited Xian Prefecture.

丙午，上與諸王大臣較射。 On bingwu day the Emperor and the princes and great ministers held an archery contest.

三月乙卯，劃離部請今後詳穩止從本部選授為宜，上曰：「諸部官惟在得人，豈得定以所部為限。」 On yimao day in the third month the Huali division petitioned that xiangwen posts should henceforth be filled only from within their own division; the Emperor said, "Officials among the tribes must be chosen for ability — how can appointments be fixed by tribal limits alone."

三年春正月丙午朔，如長濼。 In the third year, on the bingwu new moon of the first spring month, the Emperor went to Chang Marsh.

上因閱諸部籍，涅剌、烏隈二部戶少而役重，並量免之。 The Emperor then reviewed the registers of the various divisions, found that the Niela and Wuyu divisions had few households but heavy corvée burdens, and partially exempted both.

五月壬子，還上京。 On renzi day in the fifth month the Emperor returned to the Supreme Capital.

己亥，速撒奏朮不姑諸部至近澱，夷離堇易魯姑請行俘掠，上曰：「諸部於國無惡，何故俘掠，徒生事耳。」 On jihai day Susa reported that the Jubugu tribes had reached the near marshlands and yilijin Yilugu asked permission to raid for captives; the Emperor said, "These tribes have done the state no harm — why raid for captives and needlessly stir up trouble."

聖宗二 Shengzong, Part Two

四年春正月甲戌，觀漁土河。 In the fourth year of Tonghe, on jiaxu day of the first spring month, the Emperor watched fishing at the Tuhu River.

林牙耶律謀魯姑、彰德軍節度使蕭闥覽上東征俘獲，賜詔獎諭。 Yulin Yelü Molugu and Zhangde Army military commissioner Xiao Talan reported captives from the eastern campaign; an edict commended them.

丙子，樞密使耶律斜軫、林牙勤德等上討女直所獲生口十餘萬、馬二十餘萬及諸物。 On bingzi day Commissioner of Military Affairs Yelü Xiezhen, yulin Qinde, and others reported more than a hundred thousand captives, more than two hundred thousand horses, and other goods taken in the Jurchen campaign.

己卯，朝皇太后。 On jimao day the Emperor attended court before the Empress Dowager.

乙亥，以親征告陵廟、山川。 On yihai day the court notified the imperial mausoleums, temples, and mountains and rivers that the Emperor would campaign in person.

時上與皇太后駐兵駝羅口，詔趣東征兵馬以為應援。 At that time the Emperor and the Empress Dowager were encamped at Tuoluokou; an edict ordered the eastern levies to hurry forward as reinforcements.

癸卯，休哥復以捷報，上以酒脯祭天地。 On guimao day Xiuge again reported victory; the Emperor offered wine and dried meat in sacrifice to heaven and earth.

時上次涿州東五十里。 At that time the Emperor was encamped fifty li east of Zhuo Prefecture.

戊午，上次沙姑河之北澱，召林牙勤德議軍事。 On wuwu day the Emperor encamped at the shoal north of the Shagu River and summoned yulin Qinde to discuss military affairs.

諸將校各以所俘獲來上。 Each of the officers presented his captives and booty.

庚申，上朝皇太后。 On gengshen day the Emperor attended court before the Empress Dowager.

乙卯，皇太妃、諸王、公主迎上嶺表，設禦幄道傍，置景宗御容，率從臣進酒，陳俘獲於前，遂大宴。 On yimao day the imperial consort, princes, and princesses welcomed the Emperor beyond the pass; they set an imperial canopy beside the road, placed Emperor Jingzong's portrait, led the attending ministers in presenting wine, displayed captives before them, and then held a great banquet.

又以殺敵多，詔上京開龍寺建佛事一月，飯僧萬人。 Because so many enemies had been killed, an edict also ordered a month-long Buddhist service at Shangjing's Kailong Monastery and the feeding of ten thousand monks.

九月丙寅朔，皇太妃以上納後，進衣物、駝馬，以助會親頒賜。 On the bingyin new moon of the ninth month the Grand Consort, having already presented gifts after the Empress's investiture, further sent clothing, camels, and horses to assist the marriage gifts and distributions.

甲戌，次黑河，以重九登高於高水南阜，祭天。 On jiaxu day the court halted at Black River; on the Double Ninth the Emperor climbed the southern hill at Gaoshui and sacrificed to Heaven.

丁酉，皇太后復行再生禮，為帝祭神祈福。 On dingyou day the Empress Dowager again performed the rebirth rite, sacrificing to the spirits to pray for the Emperor's blessing.

乙卯，幸南京。 On yimao day the Emperor visited Nanjing.

甲子，上與大臣分朋擊鞠。 On jiazi day the Emperor and the great ministers divided into teams and played cuju.

癸酉，禦正殿，大勞南征將校。 On guiyou day the Emperor held court in the Main Hall and greatly rewarded the southern campaign generals and officers.

戊寅，日南至，上率從臣祭酒景宗御容。 On wuyin day, the winter solstice, the Emperor led the accompanying ministers to sacrifice and offer wine before Emperor Jingzong's portrait.

北皮室詳穩排亞獻所獲宋諜二人，上賜衣物，令還招諭泰州。 Northern Pishi xiangwen Paiya presented two captured Song spies; the Emperor granted them clothing and ordered them back to win over Taizhou.

上率大軍與宋將劉廷讓、李敬源戰於莫州，敗之。 The Emperor led the main army against Song generals Liu Tingrang and Li Jingyuan at Mo Prefecture and defeated them.

己卯，禦元和殿，大賚將士。 On jimao day the Emperor attended Yuanhe Hall and held a great distribution of rewards for officers and soldiers.

壬辰，如華林、天柱。 On renchen day the Emperor went to Hualin and Tianzhu.

二月甲午朔，至自天柱。 On the jiawu new moon of the second month the Emperor returned from Tianzhu.

三月癸亥朔，幸長春宮，賞花釣魚，以牡丹遍賜近臣，歡宴累日。 On the guihai new moon of the third month the Emperor visited Changchun Palace, enjoyed flowers and fishing, distributed peonies among his close ministers, and feasted for several days.

夏四月癸巳朔，幸南京。 On the guisi new moon of the fourth summer month the Emperor went to Nanjing.

丁酉，上率百僚冊上皇太后尊號曰睿德神略應運啟化承天皇太后； On dingyou day the Emperor led the hundred officials in conferring on the Empress Dowager the honorific Sagacious Virtue, Divine Strategy, Responsive to Fortune, Initiating Transformation, Upholding Heaven Empress Dowager;

禮畢，群臣上皇帝尊號曰至德廣孝昭聖天輔皇帝。 When the rite was finished the ministers conferred on the Emperor the honorific Utmost Virtue, Expansive Filial Piety, Illustrious Sage, Heaven-Aided Emperor.

六月壬辰朔，召大臣決庶政。 On the renchen new moon of the sixth month the Emperor summoned senior ministers to decide routine affairs of state.

是月，獵平地松林。 That month the Emperor hunted at Pingdi Pine Forest.

九月丙戌，幸南京。 On bingxu day of the ninth month the Emperor went to Nanjing.

六年春正月庚申，如華林、天柱。 In the sixth year of Tonghe, on gengshen day of the first spring month, the Emperor went to Hualin and Tianzhu.

三月己未，休哥奏宋事宜，上親覽之。 On jiwei day in the third month Xiuge reported on affairs with Song; the Emperor read the memorial himself.

夏四月乙未，幸南京。 On yiwei day of the fourth summer month the Emperor went to Nanjing.

十一月甲申朔，上以將攻長城口，詔諸軍備攻具。 On the jiashen new moon of the eleventh month, with an assault on Changcheng Pass imminent, an edict ordered all armies to prepare siege equipment.

上與韓德讓邀擊之，殺獲殆盡，獲者分隸燕軍。 the Emperor and Han Derang intercepted them, killing and capturing nearly all; survivors were distributed among the Yan armies.

甲午，拔其城，軍士開北門遁，上使諭其將領，乃率眾降。 On jiawu day the city fell; soldiers fled through the north gate; the Emperor sent envoys to their commanders, who then led their men in surrender.

丙辰，畋於沙河。 On bingchen day the Emperor hunted at the Sha River.

三卒出營劫掠，笞以徇眾，以所獲物分賜左右。 Three soldiers left camp to plunder; they were flogged before the troops as an example, and the loot was divided among those around the Emperor.

壬辰，李繼遷與兄繼捧有怨，乞與通好，上知其非誠，不許。 On renchen day Li Jiqian, who was at odds with his elder brother Jipeng, asked to restore friendly relations; the Emperor knew the request was insincere and refused.

甲辰，大軍齊進，破易州，降刺史劉墀，守陴士卒南遁，上帥師邀之，無敢出者。 On jiachen day the main army advanced together, broke Yi Prefecture, and Prefect Liu Chi surrendered; the garrison fled south over the walls, and when the Emperor led troops to cut them off none dared emerge.

二月壬子朔，上御元和殿受百官賀。 On the renzi new moon of the second month the Emperor attended Yuanhe Hall and received congratulations from the hundred officials.

甲子，諫議大夫馬得臣以上好擊球，上疏切諫：「臣伏見陛下聽朝之暇，以擊球為樂。 On jiazi day Remonstrance and Review Grand Master Ma Dechen, because the Emperor loved playing cuju, submitted a forceful memorial: "Your servant observes that in leisure after court Your Majesty takes pleasure in striking the ball.

臣望陛下念繼承之重，止危險之戲。」 Your servant hopes Your Majesty will reflect on the weight of succession and cease this dangerous game."

疏奏，大嘉納之。 When the memorial was submitted, the Emperor greatly praised it and accepted the advice.

秋七月乙酉，禦含涼殿視朝。 On yiyou day in the seventh autumn month the Emperor held court at the Cool Hall.

是日，帝與皇太后謁景宗皇帝廟。 That same day the Emperor and Empress Dowager visited Emperor Jingzong's temple.

帝不豫，受遺詔輔立太子，是為興宗，賜貞亮弘靖保義守節耆德功臣，拜太師、中書令，加尚父，徙王陳。 When the Emperor fell ill, Jian received the deathbed edict to assist in establishing the heir, who became Xingzong; he was granted the title of meritorious minister of steadfast integrity and aged virtue, appointed Grand Preceptor and Secretariat Director, raised to Honored Father, and transferred to Prince of Chen.

宰相密諭上意，乃視事。 The chief councilors privately conveyed the Emperor's wishes, and only then did he resume office.

聖宗即位，皇太后稱制，兼侍讀學士。 When Shengzong succeeded to the throne and the Empress Dowager assumed regency, he was additionally made attendant reader academician.

上閱唐高祖、太宗、玄宗三《紀》，得臣乃錄其行事可法者進之。 When the Emperor read the three annals of Tang Gaozu, Taizong, and Xuanzong, Dechen selected and presented their conduct worth emulating.

時上擊鞠無度，上書諫曰：臣竊觀房玄齡、杜如晦，隋季書生，向不遇太宗，安能為一代名相？ At the time the Emperor played cuju without restraint; Dechen submitted a remonstrance, saying, "Your servant has observed Fang Xuanling and Du Ruhui — mere scholars of the late Sui — who could never have become the great ministers of an age had they not met Emperor Taizong?"

書奏，帝嘉嘆良久。 When the memorial was submitted, the Emperor praised it and sighed over it for a long while.

父勞古，以善屬文為聖宗詩友。 His father Laogu, skilled in literary composition, was Shengzong's companion in poetry.

帝問以政，樸具陳百姓疾苦，國用豐耗，帝悅曰：「吾得人矣！」 The Emperor questioned him on government; Pu set forth in detail the people's hardships and whether state revenue was abundant or depleted; the Emperor said with pleasure, "I have found my man!"

時太平日久，帝留心翰墨，始畫譜牒以別嫡庶，由是爭訟紛起。 Peace had then lasted long; the Emperor turned his attention to records and genealogy, and for the first time drew up registers to distinguish legitimate from secondary lines; from this lawsuits arose in profusion.

樸有吏才，能知人主意，敷奏稱旨，朝議多取決之。 Pu had administrative talent; he could grasp the ruler's intent; his presentations accorded with the Emperor's wishes; and court deliberations often followed his judgment.

七年，上命東平王蕭排押帥師伐高麗，八哥為都監，至開京，大掠而還。 In the seventh year the Emperor ordered Eastern Pacification Prince Xiao Paiya to command an army against Goryeo; Bagge served as army supervisor; they reached Kaesong and returned after extensive plunder.

明年，還東京，奏渤海承奉官宜有以統領之，上從其言，置都知押班。 The following year, after returning to the Eastern Capital, he memorialized that Bohai tribute officials ought to be placed under unified supervision; the Emperor accepted his proposal and established the post of director of supervisory escort shifts.

論曰：張儉名符帝夢，遂結主知，服弊袍不易，誌敦薄俗，功著兩朝，世稱賢相，非過也。 The commentary says: Zhang Jian's name matched the Emperor's dream, and thus he won the ruler's trust; he wore a threadbare robe and would not replace it, bearing witness to his devotion to plain living; his achievements stood out across two reigns; the age calls him a worthy chief minister — and that is no exaggeration.

聖宗得人，於斯為盛。 In gathering such men, Shengzong's reign reached its fullest height.

上聞，以手詔褒獎，賜內廄馬。 When the emperor heard of it, he rewarded him with a handwritten edict and gave him a stallion from the imperial stables.

二十八年，駕征高麗，盆奴為先鋒。 In the twenty-eighth year, when the emperor campaigned against Goryeo, Pennu served as vanguard.

上嘉其功，遷北院大王，薨。 The emperor praised his achievement and made him Grand Prince of the Northern Division; he later died.

數問以古今治亂，資忠對無隱。 Several times the emperor asked him about order and disorder in past and present times; Zizhong answered without concealment.

由是權貴數短於上，出為上京副留守。 For this the powerful often spoke ill of him to the emperor, and he was sent out as Deputy Regent of the Supreme Capital.

帝與群臣宴，時一記憶曰：「資忠亦有此樂乎？」 The emperor feasted with his ministers and at one point recalled: "Does Zizhong also enjoy pleasures such as these?"

帝郊迎，同載以歸，命大臣宴勞，留禁中數日。 The emperor met him in the suburbs and rode back with him in the same carriage. He ordered the great ministers to feast and reward him and kept him in the palace several days.

帝怒，奪官。 The emperor was angry and stripped him of his office.

聖宗崩，表請會葬。 When Emperor Shengzong died, he submitted a memorial requesting permission to attend the funeral.

聖宗嘗諭瑤質曰：「聞卿正直，是以進用。 Emperor Shengzong once instructed Yaozhi: "I have heard you are upright, and for this I advance you.

上征高麗，破康肇軍於銅州，瑤質之力為多。 When the emperor campaigned against Goryeo and defeated Kang Zhao's army at Tongzhou, Yaozhi's effort counted for much.

帝曰：「朕不使汝久處是任。」 The emperor said: "I will not let you remain long in that post."

上將伐高麗，遣正先往諭意。 When the emperor was about to campaign against Goryeo, he sent Zheng ahead to announce his intent.

時高麗王詢表請入覲，上許之，遣正率騎兵千人迓之。 At that time Goryeo King Sun memorialized requesting to come to court. The emperor permitted it and sent Zheng with a thousand cavalry to meet him.

上悔輕發，釋其罪。 The emperor regretted having acted rashly and remitted his crime.

帝壯之曰：「以卿英才，為國戮力，真吾家千里駒也！」 The emperor praised him, saying: "With your outstanding talent exerted for the state, you are truly our family's thousand-li colt!"
