景誘執豫州刺史高元成、襄州刺史李密、廣州刺史暴顯等。 Hou Jing lured and seized Yuzhou Inspector Gao Yuancheng, Xiangzhou Inspector Li Mi, Guangzhou Inspector Bao Xian, and others.

議者咸云侯景猶有北望之心，但信命不至耳。 Those who debated the matter all said Hou Jing still looked northward, but only the command had not reached him.

又景將蔡遵道北歸，稱景有悔過之心。 Again Hou Jing's officer Cai Zundao returned north and said Hou Jing wished to repent.

王以為信然，謂可誘而致，乃遺景書曰： Gao Cheng believed it and thought he could be lured back; he sent Hou Jing a letter saying,

先王與司徒契闊夷險，孤子相依，偏所眷屬，義貫終始，情存歲寒。 The late king and the Minister of Works shared hardship through peril and isolation; I, his orphan, depended on you—you were his special charge. Righteousness ran from first to last; affection endured through the cold years.

孤子今日不應遣此，但見蔡遵道云：「司徒本無西歸之心，深有悔過之意」，未知此語為虛為實。 I, the orphan, ought not to send this today, but I saw Cai Zundao say, "The Minister of Works originally had no mind to go west and deeply wished to repent"—I do not know whether these words are empty or real.

景報書曰： Hou Jing replied in a letter:

且尊王平昔見與比肩，戮力同心，共獎帝室，雖復權勢參差，寒暑小異，丞相司徒，雁行而已。 Moreover the honored king in former days treated me as an equal; we strove together with one heart and jointly upheld the imperial house—though power was unequal and cold and heat differed slightly, Chancellor and Minister of Works were only like geese in flight.

王欲間景於梁，又與景書而謬其辭，云本使景陽叛，欲與圖西，西人知之，故景更與圖南為事。 Gao Cheng wished to drive a wedge between Hou Jing and Liang, and wrote to Jing with falsified wording, saying he had originally sent Jing to stir rebellion at Jingyang and meant to plot the west together; when Western Wei learned of it, Jing turned instead to plotting with the south.

法和旣平約，往進見王僧辯於巴陵，謂曰：「貧道已斷侯景一臂，其更何能為，檀越宜卽遂取。」 After Fahe had pacified Yue, he went forward to see Wang Sengbian at Baling and said, "This humble monk has already cut off one arm of Hou Jing—what more can he do? My patron should press the attack at once."

乃請還，謂湘東王曰：「侯景自然平矣，無足可慮。 He then asked leave to return and told the Prince of Xiangdong, "Hou Jing will naturally be pacified—nothing to worry over.

太清二年，侯景渡江，遣琳獻米萬石。 In the second year of Taiqing, Hou Jing crossed the Yangzi; Lin was sent to present ten thousand piculs of grain.

武定八年，侯景叛，除東南道行臺尚書，封江夏縣男，與高岳等破侯景，擒蕭明。 In the eighth year of Wuding, Hou Jing rebelled. Shu was made masters of writing on the southeastern mobile grand secretariat and enfeoffed as nan (baron) of Jiangxia county. With Gao Yue and others he broke Hou Jing and took Xiao Ming prisoner.

齊天保元年，侯景徵江西租稅，術率諸軍渡淮斷之，燒其稻數百萬石。 In Qi's first Tianbao year, Hou Jing levied rents from Jiangxi. Shu led troops across the Huai to block him and burned several million shi of his grain.

及王僧辯破侯景，術招攜安撫，城鎮相繼款附，前後二十餘州。 When Wang Sengbian defeated Hou Jing, Shu won men over and pacified the land; towns and garrisons submitted one after another—more than twenty provinces in all.

三月，侯景自帥衆西寇。 In the third month Hou Jing personally led his army west on campaign.

乙亥，景分遣偽將宋子仙、任約襲郢州。 On yihai day Hou Jing detached the rebel generals Song Zixian and Ren Yue to strike Yingzhou.

閏月甲子，景進寇巴陵，湘東王繹所遣領軍將軍王僧辯連戰不能剋。 On jiazi in the intercalary month Hou Jing pressed on Baling; Wang Senbian, the commanding general Prince Yi of Xiangdong had sent, fought again and again but could not win.

五月癸未，湘東王驛遣遊擊將軍胡僧祐、信州刺史陸法和援巴陵，景遣任約帥衆拒援軍。 On guwei in the fifth month Prince Yi of Xiangdong sent mobile corps general Hu Sengyou and Xin province inspector Lu Fahe to relieve Baling; Hou Jing sent Ren Yue with an army to block them.

乙巳，景解圍宵遁，王僧辯督衆軍追景。 On yisi day Hou Jing broke the siege and fled under cover of night; Wang Senbian led the combined armies in pursuit.

秋七月丁亥，侯景還至京師。 On dinghai day in the seventh month of autumn Hou Jing returned to the capital.

戊午，侯景遣衛尉卿彭俊、廂公王僧貴率兵入殿，廢太宗為晉安王，幽于永福省。 On wuwu day Hou Jing sent minister of the guard Peng Jun and palace section commander Wang Senggui with troops into the hall, deposed Taizong as Prince of Jin'an, and imprisoned him in Yongfu Palace.

Huili routed him.

方得進路，臺城陷，侯景遣前臨江太守董紹先以高祖手敕召會理，其僚佐咸勸距之。 He had barely secured his line of advance when the imperial city fell. Hou Jing sent the former administrator of Linjiang, Dong Shaoxian, to summon Huili with a personal edict in Emperor Wu's hand. His officers all urged him to refuse.

至京，景以爲侍中、司空、兼中書令。 When he reached the capital, Hou Jing appointed him palace attendant, Minister of Works, and concurrent Director of the Secretariat.

皓敗，辭相連及，景矯詔免會理官，猶以白衣領尚書令。 When Hao was defeated, testimony implicated Huili. Hou Jing forged an edict stripping him of rank, yet still had him, as a commoner in dress, serve as head of the Department of State Affairs.

是冬，景往晉熙，景師虛弱，會理復與柳敬禮謀之。 That winter Hou Jing went to Jinxi. His garrison was weak, and Huili again plotted with Liu Jingli.

縱景後歸，無能爲也。」 Even if Hou Jing returns afterward, he will be powerless."

太清中，侯景內寇，乂理聚賓客數百，輕裝赴南兗州，隨兄會理入援，恒親當矢石，爲士卒先。 During the Taiqing era, when Hou Jing invaded the interior, Yili gathered several hundred retainers, went lightly equipped to South Yanzhou, and followed his brother Huili to relieve the capital. He always placed himself in the line of fire ahead of his men.

行二日，會侯景遣董紹先據廣陵，遂追會理，因爲所獲。 Two days into the journey, Hou Jing sent Dong Shaoxian to seize Guangling. Shaoxian then pursued Huili, and Yili was captured.

其左右有應賊者，因間劫會理，其衆遂駭散，爲景所害，時年二十一。 Some of his followers sided with the rebels. They seized an opening to kidnap Huili; Yili's force panicked and scattered, and Hou Jing killed him. He was twenty-one.

侯景構逆，加征討大都督，率衆討景。 When Hou Jing plotted rebellion, Xiao Lun was additionally made grand area commander to campaign and punish, and he led an army against Hou Jing.

將發，高祖誡曰：「侯景小豎，頗習行陣，未可以一戰卽殄，當以歲月圖之。」 As he was about to set out, Emperor Wu warned him: "Hou Jing is a petty rebel who knows his way around a battlefield. You cannot wipe him out in one battle—you must wear him down over time."

綸次鐘離，景已度釆石。 By the time Xiao Lun reached Zhongli, Hou Jing had already crossed Caishi.

侯景之軍所以未窺江外者，正爲籓屏盤固，宗鎮強密。 The reason Hou Jing's army has not yet looked beyond the Yangzi is precisely that the princely domains stand firm as a screen and the imperial fiefs are strong and secure.

若自相魚肉，是代景行師。 If we devour one another, we fight Hou Jing's battles for him.

景便不勞兵力，坐致成效，醜徒聞此，何快如之！ Hou Jing would need no effort of his own and would achieve his ends at leisure—how the vile rebel would rejoice at that!

侯景卒承虛藉釁，浮江豕突，豈不表裹成虞，首尾難救？ Hou Jing would then seize the opening, cross the Yangzi like a rampaging boar—would we not face danger within and without, impossible to save at either end?

侯景事等內癰，西秦外同瘤腫。 Hou Jing is a carbuncle within; Western Qin is a tumor without.

溥天率土，忠臣憤慨，比屋罹禍，忠義奮發，無不抱甲負戈，沖冠裂眥，咸欲剚刃於侯景腹中，所須兵主唱耳。 Under heaven and across the earth loyal ministers burn with outrage; every household suffers. Righteous fury flares—men don armor and take up weapons, bristling with rage, all wishing to drive blades into Hou Jing's belly. They need only a commander to lead them.

侯景方延假息，復緩誅刑，信增號憤，啓處無地。 Hou Jing was then buying time and deferring punishment—the news only deepened my cries of rage. I had nowhere to turn.

於是大修器甲，將討侯景。 Thereupon he greatly refurbished armor and weapons, intending to campaign against Hou Jing.

侯景將任約聞之，使鐵騎二百襲綸，綸無備，又敗走定州。 Hou Jing's general Ren Yue heard of this and sent two hundred armored horsemen to raid Xiao Lun. Unprepared, Xiao Lun was defeated again and fled to Dingzhou.

侯景圍城，堅屯太陽門，終日蒲飲，不撫軍政。 When Hou Jing besieged the capital, Jian held the Taiyang Gate, drinking all day on rush mats and neglecting military affairs.

及侯景乞盟，確在外，慮爲後患，啓求召確入城。 When Hou Jing sued for peace, Que was outside the walls. Fearing he would become a threat later, a memorial asked that Que be recalled into the city.

時臺使周石珍在坐，確謂石珍曰：「侯景雖云欲去，而不解長圍，以意而推，其事可見。 The court envoy Zhou Shizhen was present. Que told him, "Hou Jing says he will leave, but he keeps the long siege intact. That tells you what he really intends.

及景背盟復圍城，城陷，確排闥入，啓高祖曰：「城已陷矣。」 When Hou Jing broke the truce and besieged the city again, the walls fell. Que burst through the inner gate and told Emperor Wu, "The city is lost."

確旣出見景，景愛其膂力，恒令在左右。 When Que went out to see Hou Jing, Hou Jing admired his strength and always kept him close.

後從景行，見天上飛鳶，羣虜爭射不中，確射之，應弦而落。 Later, marching with Hou Jing, they saw a kite overhead. The rebels all shot and missed. Que shot once and brought it down.

乃板昕爲雲騎將軍，代質，未及下渚，景已渡江，仍遣率所領遊防城外，不得入守。 He was hastily named General of Cloud Cavalry to replace Zhi. Before Xin reached Xiazhu, Jing had crossed the Yangzi. Xin was posted outside the walls on patrol and could not enter to defend.

欲奔京口，乃爲景所擒。 He tried to flee to Jingkou but was seized by Jing.

景見昕殷勤，因留極飲，曰：「我至此得卿，餘人無能爲也。」 Jing found Xin obliging and kept him for a long drinking bout, saying, "With you in hand I need no one else."

景使其儀同范桃棒嚴禁之，昕因說桃棒令率所領歸降，襲殺王偉、宋子仙爲信。 Jing had his officer Fan Taobang guard him closely. Xin persuaded Taobang to lead his men in surrender and kill Wang Wei and Song Zixian as proof of good faith.

景邀得之，乃逼昕令更射書城中，云「桃棒且輕將數十人先入。」 Jing caught him and forced him to shoot another message into the city: "Taobang will send only a few dozen men inside first."

景欲裹甲隨之。 Jing meant to follow in armor himself.

昕旣不肯爲書，期以必死，遂爲景所害，時年三十三。 Xin refused to write the letter, accepting death, and Jing killed him. He was thirty-three.

敬容尋見東宮，太宗謂曰：「淮北始更有信，侯景定得身免，不如所傳。」 Jingrong soon had an audience in the Eastern Palace, and Taizong said to him, "News has only just come again from north of the Huai: Hou Jing certainly escaped alive, not as the rumors said."

敬容對曰：「得景遂死，深是朝廷之福。」 Jingrong replied, "If Jing had indeed died, it would be a great blessing for the court."

敬容曰：「景翻覆叛臣，終當亂國。」 Jingrong said, "Jing is a treacherous rebel minister; in the end he will throw the state into disorder."

景進不得前，退失巢窟，烏合之衆，自然瓦解。」 Block his advance, cut off his refuge, and this mob will scatter on its own.”

議者謂景未敢便逼京師，遂寢其策，令侃率千餘騎頓望國門。 Councillors said Jing would not dare march on the capital yet; the plan died, and Kan was told to hold a thousand horse before the Wang Gate.

景至新林，追侃入副宣城王都督城內諸軍事。 When Jing reached Xinlin, Kan was recalled into the city to serve as deputy to the Prince of Xuancheng, who commanded all military affairs within the walls.

時景旣卒至，百姓競入，公私混亂，無復次第。 Jing struck too fast; people poured through the gates in chaos, public and private alike.

初，侃長子躭爲景所獲，執來城下示侃，侃謂曰：「我傾宗報主，猶恨不足，豈復計此一子，幸汝早能殺之。」 Jing had taken Kan’s eldest son Dan and brought him under the wall. Kan called, “I have spent my house for the throne and still call it little—why spare one son? Kill him quickly, I beg you.”

景遣儀同傅士哲呼侃與語曰：「侯王遠來問訊天子，何爲閉距，不時進納？ Jing sent Fu Shizhe, Compeer of the Third Rank, to parley: “The marquis has come far to greet the Son of Heaven—why shut the gates?

侃曰：「侯將軍奔亡之後，歸命國家，重鎮方城，懸相任寄，何所患苦？ Kan said, “After your flight you were trusted with a great frontier command—what grievance could you have?

幸謝侯王，早自爲所。」 Marquis, see to your own end.”

士哲又曰：「侯王事君盡節，不爲朝廷所知，正欲面啓至尊，以除姦佞，旣居戎旅，故帶甲來朝，何謂作逆？」 Shizhe said, “The marquis served with perfect loyalty and the court misunderstood him. He only wished to see the emperor and purge villains—being in the field he wore armor. How is that treason?”

且侯王親舉白刃，以向城闕，事君盡節，正若是邪！」 And you yourself brought naked steel to the palace—is that loyalty?”

侯景呼還，待之甚厚。 Hou Jing called him back and favored him richly.

及景敗，鶤密圖之，乃隨其東走。 When Jing fell, Kun plotted in secret and followed him east.

景于松江戰敗，惟餘三舸，下海欲向蒙山。 Jing lost on the Song River with three boats left and put to sea for Mengshan.

會景倦晝寢，鶤語海師：「此中何處有蒙山！ Jing fell asleep at midday; Kun told the pilot, “There is no Mengshan here—

至胡豆洲，景覺，大驚，問岸上人，云「郭元建猶在廣陵」，景大喜，將依之。 At Hudou Isle Jing woke in panic and hailed the bank: “Guo Yuanjian still holds Guangling”—Jing was overjoyed and meant to go to him.

景欲透水，鶤抽刀斫之，景乃走入船中，以小刀抉船，鶤以槊入刺殺之。 Jing tried to swim clear; Kun hacked at him. Jing fled into the cabin and picked at the planking with a knife—Kun ran him through with a spear.

侯景降，詔鴉仁督士州刺史桓和之、仁州刺史湛海珍等精兵三萬，趨懸瓠應接景，仍爲都督豫司淮冀殷應西豫等七州諸軍事、司豫二州刺史，鎮懸瓠。 When Hou Jing submitted, Yaren was told to lead Huan Hezhi of Shizhou, Zhan Haizhen of Renzhou, and thirty thousand picked men to Xuanhu to meet Jing—and to command seven provinces from Yu to Western Yu as Si-Yu inspector, based at Xuanhu.

及與景盟訖，城中文武喜躍，望得解圍。 When the oath with Jing was finished, civil and military men in the city rejoiced, hoping the siege would be lifted.

乃執嵊以送景，景刑之於都市，子弟同遇害者十餘人，時年六十二。 They seized Sheng and sent him to Jing; Jing executed him in the market, and sons and brothers who suffered with him numbered more than ten—he was sixty-two.

侯景逼京城，遷御史中丞。 When Hou Jing pressed the capital he was promoted to censor-in-chief.

是時外援並至，侯景表請求和，詔許之。 Outside aid all arrived; Hou Jing memorialized asking for peace and an edict granted it.

旣盟，景知城內疾疫，復懷奸計，遲疑不去。 After the oath Jing knew plague raged within the city and again harbored treacherous design, hesitating and not leaving.

數日，皇太子令浚詣景所，景曰：「卽已向熱，非復行時。 After several days the crown prince ordered Jun to Jing's quarters; Jing said, "It has already turned hot—not the season for marching again.

景橫刃於膝，暿真目叱之。 Jing laid a blade across his knee, glared angrily, and shouted at him.

浚正色責景曰：「明公親是人臣，舉兵向闕，聖主申恩赦過，已共結盟，口血未乾，而有翻背。 Jun in stern color rebuked Jing, "Your Grace is plainly a minister who raised troops against the palace; the sage ruler pardoned past faults and you have sworn alliance—oath blood not yet dry, yet there is treachery.

景曰：「是真司直也。」 Jing said, "This is a true upright censor."

侯景渡江，敬禮率馬步三千赴援。 When Hou Jing crossed the river Jingli led three thousand horse and foot to the rescue.

至都，據青溪埭，與景頻戰，恒先登陷陳，甚著威名。 Reaching the capital he held Qingxi Ford and fought Jing repeatedly, always first to scale and break the line, winning great renown.

台城沒，敬禮與仲禮俱見於景，景遣仲禮經略上流，留敬禮爲質，以爲護軍。 When the terrace city fell Jingli and Zhongli both appeared before Jing; Jing sent Zhongli upriver and kept Jingli as hostage, making him General Who Guards the Army.

景餞仲禮於後渚，敬禮密謂仲禮曰：「景今來會，敬禮抱之，兄拔佩刀，便可斫殺，敬禮死亦無所恨。」 Jing saw Zhongli off at Rear Ford; Jingli secretly said to Zhongli, "Jing comes to this meeting—Jingli will embrace him; brother, draw your sword and you can cut him down; Jingli dies without regret."

侯景聞之，乃率大衆西上援約，至西陽。 Hou Jing heard and led a great force west to save Yue, reaching Xiyang.

諸將咸曰：「景水軍輕進，又甚饑疲，可因此擊之，必大捷。」 The generals said, "Jing's fleet came fast and is starving—we can strike now and win a great victory."

文盛妻石氏，先在建鄴，至是，景載以還之。 Wensheng's wife Lady Shi had been in Jiankang; Jing now sent her back to him.

文盛深德景，遂密通信使，都無戰心，衆咸憤怨。 Wensheng felt beholden to Jing and began secret correspondence; he would not fight—the army seethed with anger.

杜幼安、守簉等乃率所領獨進，與景戰，大破之，獲其舟艦以歸。 Du You'an, Shouzao, and others led their men out alone, fought Jing, smashed him, and brought back his ships.

會景密遣騎從間道襲陷郢州，軍中兇懼，遂大潰。 Then Jing sent cavalry by a hidden road, took E prefecture, and the army collapsed in terror.

令隨王僧辯東討侯景。 He was ordered to follow Wang Sengbian east against Hou Jing.

至巴陵，會景來攻，數十日不剋而遁。 At Baling Hou Jing attacked; after many days he could not win and fled.

仍隨僧辯追景至石頭，與賊相持橫嶺。 He followed Sengbian in pursuit to Stonehead and faced the bandit at Heng Ridge.

太清五年夏四月，紀帥軍東下至巴郡，以討侯景爲名，將圖荊陝。 In the fourth month of summer in the fifth year of Taiqing, Ji led his army east to Ba commandery, claiming to attack Hou Jing but intending to seize Jing and Shan.

及景至江，正德潛運空舫，詐稱迎荻，以濟景焉。 When Jing reached the river, Zhengde sent empty boats under the pretense of collecting reeds and ferried him across.

景至，正德乃引軍與景俱進，景推正德爲天子，改年爲正平元年，景爲丞相。 Jing came; Zhengde opened the gates and marched with him. Jing proclaimed Zhengde emperor, named the era Zhengping year one, and took the chancellorship himself.

時景党稱景命召之，太子方講老子，將下床而刑人掩至。 Jing's men then arrived, summoning him in Jing's name; the crown prince was expounding the Laozi and had just risen from his couch when the executioners were upon him.

景之西上，攜太子同行，及敗歸，船往往相失。 When Jing marched west he took the crown prince along; on his defeat and return, their boats often lost contact.

及歡疾篤，澄詐為歡書以召景。 When Gao Huan's illness grew grave, Gao Cheng forged his hand to summon Jing.
