時議皆以為安重誨方弄國權，從榮諸王敬事不暇，獨忌從珂威名，每於帝前屢言其短，巧作窺圖，冀能傾陷。 Opinion held that An Chonghui monopolized power while Congrong and other princes barely kept up courtesy; Chonghui alone envied Congke and repeatedly slandered him to Mingzong hoping to destroy him.

重誨謂馮道等曰：「蒲帥失守，責帥之義，法當如何？」 Chonghui asked Feng Dao and others: "The Hedong commander lost his post—what penalty applies for punishing a commander?"

後數日，帝於中興殿見宰臣，趙鳳承重誨意，又再論列，帝默然。 Days later at the Zhongxing Hall Zhao Feng again pressed Chonghui's case and Mingzong stayed silent.

翌日，重誨復自論奏，帝極言以拒之，語在《末帝紀》中。 The next day Chonghui argued again and Mingzong firmly refused, as told in the 《Annals of the Last Emperor》.

重誨曰：「於陛下父子之間，臣不合言，一稟聖旨。」 Chonghui said: "Between father and son it is not for me to speak—I leave it to the sacred decree."

建立素與安重誨不協，因其入朝，乃言建立自鎮歸朝過鄴都，日有扇搖之言，以是罪之，故令致仕。 Jianli had long clashed with Chonghui; when he came to court Chonghui said he had spread sedition passing through Yedu on his return—hence forced retirement.

初，豆盧革、韋說得罪，執政議命相，樞密使孔循意不欲河朔人居相位，任圜欲相李琪，而鄭玨素與琪不協，孔循亦惡琪，謂安重誨曰：「李琪非無藝學，但不廉耳。 When Doulu Ge and Wei Yue fell from power, the court debated a new chief minister. Kong Xun did not want a man from the region north of the Yellow River in the post. Ren Yuan favored Li Qi, but Zheng Jue had long been at odds with Qi and Kong Xun also disliked him. Kong told An Chonghui, "Li Qi is learned enough, but he is not honest.

重誨然之，因奏擇相。 Chonghui agreed and memorialized to select a chief minister.

任圜奏曰：「重誨被人欺賣，如崔協者，少識文字，時人謂之『沒字碑』。 Ren Yuan objected: "Chonghui is being duped. A man like Cui Xie can barely read—people call him the 'Stele Without Characters.'

重誨私謂圜曰：「今相位缺人，協且可乎？」 Chonghui privately asked Yuan, "The chief minister's seat is vacant—would Xie do for now?"

重誨笑而止。 Chonghui laughed and said no more.

然重誨與循同職，循日言琪之短、協之長，故重誨竟從之。 Yet Chonghui and Kong Xun shared the same office, and Xun daily spoke of Qi's faults and Xie's virtues, so in the end Chonghui went along with him.

琪時為御史大夫，安重誨於台門前專殺殿直馬延。 Qi was then censor-in-chief. An Chonghui summarily executed palace attendant Ma Yan before the Censorate gate.

重誨大喜，以為然，乃以玉帶與諜者，使遺知誥為信，其直千緡。 Chonghui was delighted, took it for truth, and gave the spy a jade belt to carry to Zhigao as token—worth a thousand strings of cash.

重誨為樞密使，四五年間，獨綰大任，臧否自若，環衛、酋長、貴戚、近習，無敢幹政者。 For four or five years as Privy Council commissioner he held power alone; none among the guards, tribal leaders, imperial kin, or inner circle dared meddle in affairs.

明宗謂重誨曰：「聞卿樹心腹，私市兵仗，欲自討淮南，有之否？」 Mingzong told Chonghui, "I hear you have gathered partisans and bought weapons on the sly, planning to take Huainan yourself—is that true?"

重誨惶恐，奏曰：「興師命將，出自宸衷，必是奸人結構，臣願陛下窮詰所言者。」 Chonghui, in alarm, replied, "Only Your Majesty orders campaigns and commanders; this must be schemers' work—I beg you to trace whoever said it."

翌日，帝召侍衛指揮使安從進、藥彥稠等，謂之曰：「有人告安重誨私置兵仗，將不利於社稷，其若之何？」 Next day the emperor called An Congjin, Yao Yanchou, and others and asked, "Someone accuses An Chonghui of hoarding arms to harm the realm—what shall we do?"

且重誨事陛下三十年，從微至著，無不盡心，今日何苦乃圖不軌！ Chonghui has served you thirty years, rising from nothing, never stinting loyalty—why would he rebel now!

重誨三上表乞解機務，詔不允。 Chonghui three times asked to leave office; the throne refused.

重誨奏不已，明宗怒，謂曰：「放卿出，朕自有人！」 Chonghui kept petitioning until Mingzong snapped, "Go then—I have others!"

即令武德使孟漢瓊至中書，與宰臣商量重誨事。 He sent Martial Virtue commissioner Meng Hanqiong to the Secretariat to discuss Chonghui with the chief ministers.

馮道言曰：「諸人苟惜安令公，解樞務為便。」 Feng Dao said, "If you mean to spare Lord An, let him leave the Privy Council."

由是兼命範延光為樞密使，重誨如故。 Fan Yanguang was then made co-commissioner; Chonghui kept his post.

及石敬瑭領王師伐蜀，峽路艱阻，糧運不繼，明宗憂之，而重誨請行。 Shi Jingtang's expedition into Shu stalled on bad passes and broken supply lines; Mingzong worried, and Chonghui volunteered to go west.

重誨至鳳翔，節度使朱弘昭延於寢室，令妻子奉食器，敬事尤謹。 At Fengxiang, commissioner Zhu Hongzhao welcomed him to his private quarters; wife and children served food with deepest respect.

重誨坐中言及：「昨有人讒構，幾不保全，賴聖上保鑒，苟獲全族。」 Over the meal Chonghui said, "Yesterday slander nearly destroyed me; only the Emperor's grace spared my house."

重誨既辭，弘昭遣人具奏：「重誨怨望出惡言，不可令至行營，恐奪石敬瑭兵柄。」 After he left, Hongzhao reported, "Chonghui spoke bitterly in resentment; keep him from the front lest he steal Shi's command."

而宣徽使孟漢瓊自西回，亦奏重誨過惡。 Xuanhui commissioner Meng Hanqiong, back from the west, also denounced Chonghui.

重誨已至三泉，復令歸闕。 Chonghui had reached Sanquan when orders recalled him to court.

再過鳳翔，朱弘昭拒而不納，重誨懼，急騎奔程，未至京師，製授河中帥。 Passing Fengxiang again, Hongzhao shut him out; in fear he raced on, and before the capital an edict made him Hedong commander.

二子初至，重誨駭然曰：「渠安得來？」 At their arrival Chonghui cried, "How did they get here?"

家人欲問故，重誨曰：「吾知之矣，此非渠意，是他人教來。 His family asked why; he said, "I know—they did not choose this; someone sent them.

重誨曰：「公但言其故，勿過相湣。」 Chonghui said, "Speak your errand—do not pity me so."

中使曰：「人言令公據城異志矣！」 The messenger said, "They say you hold the city in rebellion!"

重誨曰：「吾一死未塞責，已負君親，安敢輒懷異志，遽勞朝廷興師，增聖上宵旰，則仆之罪更萬萬矣！」 Chonghui said, "One death cannot answer my debt—I have failed emperor and kin; how dare I rebel and trouble the court and your sleepless nights—my guilt would only multiply!"

時遣翟光鄴使河中，如察重誨有異志，則誅之。 Zhai Guangye was dispatched to Hedong to probe rebellion and kill him if guilt were found.

既至，李從璋自率甲士圍其第，仍拜重誨於其庭，重誨下階迎拜曰：「太傅過禮。」 Li Congzhang surrounded the house with troops yet bowed in the courtyard; Chonghui descended to return the bow, saying, "Grand Mentor, too much honor."

俯首方拜，從璋以楇擊其首，其妻驚走抱之，曰：「令公死亦不遲，太傅何遽如此！」 Mid-bow Congzhang smashed his head with a mace; his wife rushed to shield him crying, "Lord An need not die yet—Grand Mentor, why such haste!"

及從璋疏重誨家財不及數千緡，議者以重誨有經綸社稷之大功，然誌大才短，不能回避權寵，親禮士大夫，求周身輔國之遠圖，而悉自恣胸襟，果貽顛覆。 His estate proved worth only a few thousand strings; critics said he had saved the dynasty yet aimed too high, clung to power, failed to court the literati or plan for safety, indulged his pride, and was ruined.

時樞密使安重誨用事，拒其請，知祥曰：「吾知之矣。」 Privy Council commissioner An Chonghui ruled and refused; Zhixiang said, "I see."

因使密以金百兩為賂，重誨喜而為敷奏，詔許之。 He secretly sent a hundred taels of gold; Chonghui, pleased, memorialized for him and won permission.

弘昭密遣人謂敬瑭曰：「安公親來勞軍，觀其舉措孟浪，儻令得至，恐士心迎合，則不戰而自潰也。 He secretly told Jingtang, "Lord An comes to oversee the army; he acts rashly—if he reaches camp the men may rally to him and you will collapse without fighting.

重誨聞之，不敢西行，因返旆東還。 Chonghui, hearing this, dared not go west and turned back east.

及重誨得罪，其年弘昭入朝，授左武衛上將軍，充宣徽南院使。 When Chonghui fell, Hongzhao came to court as Left Martial Guard senior general and Southern Xuanhui commissioner.

而重誨何人，安所逃死，古語云：「無為權首，反受其咎。」 What sort of man was Chonghui to escape death? As the proverb says, "Do not lead the power—you will bear the blame."

圭敏於吏事，重誨本不知書，為事剛愎，每於明宗前可否重務，圭恬然終日，不能剖正其事。 Gui was quick in administrative matters, but Chonghui was unlearned and headstrong. Whenever Chonghui approved or rejected weighty matters before Mingzong, Gui would sit placidly all day without correcting him.

長興中，重誨既誅，圭出為貝州刺史，未幾罷免，退歸常山。 During the Changxing era, after Chonghui was executed, Gui was posted as prefect of Beizhou. Before long he was removed and retired to Changshan.

重誨數請行軍法，明宗不聽，後重誨見殺，乃起王為左衛大將軍、西京留守。 Chonghui pressed again and again for court-martial; Mingzong refused. After Chonghui’s fall the prince was restored as Left Guard grand general and defender of Luoyang.

初，安重誨得罪罷河中，以從璋為代，而重誨見殺，故王益自疑，遂據城反。 Congzhang had once succeeded An Chonghui at Hezhong when Chonghui fell. Chonghui’s execution only deepened the prince’s fears; he closed Fengxiang and rose in arms.

重誨區區獨見潞王之禍，而謀之不臧，至於殞身赤族，其隙自茲。 Chonghui alone, in his narrow wisdom, foresaw the Prince of Lu's doom, yet schemed badly and ended with his own death and his clan wiped out—the breach began here.

使明宗為有知，其有愧於重誨矣，哀哉！ If Mingzong could know from beyond the grave, he would blush for Chonghui—how lamentable!

仁矩素為安重誨所親信，自璋有異志，重誨思有以制之，乃分東川之閬州為保寧軍，以仁矩為節度使，遣姚洪將兵戍之。 Renju had long stood in An Chonghui’s trust. Once Zhang turned disloyal, Chonghui looked for a way to pin him. He split Lang prefecture from Dongchuan to form the Baoning army, made Renju its military governor, and sent Yao Hong to garrison it.

光業私以書示樞密承旨李虔徽，使白重誨，重誨不省。 Guangye quietly showed the letter to chief of military affairs Li Qianhui and had him warn Chonghui. Chonghui ignored it.

重誨又遣荀咸乂將兵益戍閬州，光業亟言以為不可，重誨不聽。 Chonghui also sent Xun Xianyi with more troops to Lang. Guangye pleaded that it must not be done. Chonghui would not listen.

重誨至鳳翔，弘昭迎謁，禮甚恭，延重誨於家，使其妻妾侍飲食。 Chonghui reached Fengxiang. Hongzhao received him with elaborate courtesy, entertained him at home, and had his wife and concubines serve food and drink.

重誨以弘昭厚己，酒酣，具言蒙天子厚恩，而所以讒間之端，因泣下。 Hongzhao had been lavish toward him. Deep in wine, Chonghui spoke of the emperor’s kindness and of how slander had come between them—and wept.

弘昭即奏言重誨怨望，又陰遣人馳告敬瑭，使拒重誨。 Hongzhao at once reported that Chonghui was disaffected, and secretly sent riders to urge Jingtang to defy him.

重誨亦以被讒召還，過鳳翔，弘昭閉門不納，重誨由此得罪死。 Chonghui was recalled on charges of disloyalty. At Fengxiang, Hongzhao shut him out. That was how Chonghui fell and died.

安重誨矯詔遣河中指揮使楊彥溫逐其節度使潞王從珂。 An Chonghui forged an edict and sent Yang Yanwen, a Hezhong commander, to expel the Prince of Lu Congke from his command.

彥稠希重誨旨，殺彥溫以滅口，明宗大怒，然不之罪也。 Yanchou pleased Chonghui, killed Yanwen to seal his lips, and Mingzong raged but did not punish him.

安重誨死，明宗乃復鏐官爵。 After An Chonghui died, Emperor Mingzong restored Qian Liu's titles and offices.
