勢利不屈其心，去就不違其義，吾得一人焉，曰石昂。 Profit and power never bent him; leaving or staying never broke his code—I find one: Shi Ang.

石昂，青州臨淄人也。 Shi Ang was from Linzi in Qingzhou.

家有書數千卷，喜延四方之士，士無遠近，多就昂學問，食其門下者或累歲，昂未嘗有怠色。 His house held thousands of books; scholars came from far and near; some stayed years at his gate—he never showed weariness.

而昂不求仕進。 He never sought office.

習入朝京師，監軍楊彥朗知留後事，昂以公事至府上謁，贊者以彥朗諱「石」，更其姓曰「右」。 Xi went to court; Yang Yanlang held the command as regent; Ang came on public business; the usher, because Yanlang tabooed “stone,” changed his surname to “right.”

昂趨於庭，仰責彥朗曰：「內侍奈何以私害公！ Ang strode into court and rebuked Yanlang: “How can a eunuch harm the public for private spite!

昂姓『石』，非『右』也。」 My surname is Shi, not Right.”

彥朗大怒，拂衣起去，昂即趨出。 Yanlang in rage swept out; Ang fled at once.

昂父亦好學，平生不喜佛說，父死，昂於柩前誦《尚書》，曰：「此吾先人之所欲聞也。」 His father too loved learning and disliked Buddhist teachings; at the bier Ang recited the Documents, saying, “This is what my father wished to hear.”

晉高祖時，詔天下求孝悌之士，戶部尚書王權、宗正卿石光贊、國子祭酒田敏、兵部侍郎王延等相與詣東上閤門，上昂行義可以應詔。 Under Gaozu of Jin, the court sought filial and dutiful men across the realm. Wang Quan, Minister of Revenue; Shi Guangzan, Director of the Imperial Clan Court; Tian Min, Director of the National University; Wang Yan, Vice Minister of War; and others went together to the Eastern Upper Gate and recommended Ang’s conduct as meeting the edict.

詔昂至京師，召見便殿，以為宗正丞。 Ang was summoned to the capital, received in the side hall, and made Vice Director of the Imperial Clan Court.

出帝即位，晉政日壞，昂數上疏極諫，不聽，乃稱疾東歸，以壽終于家。 When the Deposed Emperor came to the throne, Jin governance grew worse day by day. Ang repeatedly submitted sharp memorials, was ignored, pleaded illness, returned east, and died at home in old age.

昂既去，而晉室大亂。 After Ang left, the Jin court fell into great disorder.
