五十八年，英吉利入貢，使臣瑪戛爾等覲見，自陳不習拜跪，及至御前，而跽伏自若。 In the fifty-eighth year, England presented tribute; the envoys Macartney and others were received in audience; they declared themselves unaccustomed to kneeling and kowtowing, yet when they came before the throne they prostrated themselves quite naturally.

乾隆季葉，英使馬格里入覲，禮臣與議儀式，彼以覲見英王為言，特旨允用西禮。 In the late Qianlong period, the English envoy Markham was received in audience; ritual officials discussed the ceremony with him; citing the manner of audience before the King of England, a special edict permitted the use of Western etiquette.
