孝元皇帝，宣帝太子也。 Emperor Yuan was the son whom Emperor Xuan had designated as crown prince.

八歲，立為太子。 At the age of eight he was installed as crown prince.

乃歎曰：「亂我家者，太子也！」 Then he sighed and said: "The one who will disorder my house is the Crown Prince!"

繇是疏太子而愛淮陽王，曰：「淮陽王明察好法，宜為吾子。」 Because of this he kept his distance from the Crown Prince and favored King Huaiyang, saying: "King Huaiyang is clear-sighted and fond of law—he should be my son."

上有意欲用淮陽王代太子，然以少依許氏，俱從微起，故終不背焉。 His Majesty had the intention to use King Huaiyang to replace the Crown Prince, but because he had relied on the Xu clan since youth and both had risen from humble origins, he finally did not turn his back on them.

癸巳，太子即皇帝位，謁高廟。 On Guisi, the Crown Prince ascended to the emperor's position and made audience at the High Temple.

二年春正月，行幸甘泉，郊泰畤。 In the first month of spring in the second year, His Majesty proceeded to Ganquan and performed the suburban sacrifice at the Supreme Altar.

四年春正月，行幸甘泉，郊泰畤。 In the first month of spring in the fourth year, His Majesty proceeded to Ganquan and performed the suburban sacrifice at the Supreme Altar.

三月，行幸河東，祠后土。 In the third month, His Majesty proceeded to Hedong and sacrificed to Houtu.

三月，行幸雍，祠五畤。 In the third month, His Majesty proceeded to Yong and sacrificed at the Five Altars.

永光元年春正月，行幸甘泉，郊泰畤。 In the first month of spring in the first year of Yongguang, His Majesty proceeded to Ganquan and performed the suburban sacrifice at the Supreme Altar.

三月，行幸雍，祠五畤。 In the third month, His Majesty proceeded to Yong and sacrificed at the Five Altars.

三月，上幸河東，祠后土。 In the third month, His Majesty favored Hedong and sacrificed to Houtu.

冬，上幸長楊射熊館，布車騎，大獵。 In winter, His Majesty favored the Changyang shoot bear pavilion, spread chariots and cavalry, and conducted a great hunt.

建昭元年春三月，上幸雍，祠五畤。 In the third month of spring in the first year of Jianzhao, His Majesty favored Yong and sacrificed at the Five Altars.

二年春正月，行幸甘泉，郊泰畤。 In the first month of spring in the second year, His Majesty proceeded to Ganquan and performed the suburban sacrifice at the Supreme Altar.
