宗元饒，南郡江陵人也。 Zong Yuanrao was from Jiangling in Nan commandery.

及司徒王僧辯幕府初建，元饒與沛國劉師知同為主簿。 When Minister of Works Wang Sengbian first established his headquarters, Yuanrao and Liu Shizhi of Pei both served as chief clerks.

高祖受禪，除晉陵令。 When the Founder took the throne by abdication, Yuanrao was appointed magistrate of Jinling.

時高宗初即位，軍國務廣，事無巨細，一以咨之，臺省號為稱職。 At the time Emperor Xuan had just come to the throne, and military and state affairs were extensive; on matters great and small he consulted Yuanrao, and the central offices called him equal to his office.

元饒劾奏曰：「臣聞建旟求瘼，實寄廉平，褰帷恤隱，本資仁恕。 Yuanrao impeached and memorialized: "I have heard that raising banners to seek out affliction truly relies on integrity and fairness; drawing aside the carriage curtain to comfort the hidden truly relies on humaneness and forbearance.

吳興太守武陵王伯禮，豫章內史南康嗣王方泰，並驕蹇放橫，元饒案奏之，皆見削黜。 Wuxing administrator Wang Bolü, Prince of Wuling, and Yuzhang interior administrator Fang Tai, Prince of Nankang, were both arrogant and overbearing; Yuanrao impeached them by memorial and both were stripped and demoted.

元饒性公平，善持法，諳曉故事，明練治體，吏有犯法、政不便民及於名教不足者，隨事糾正，多所裨益。 Yuanrao's nature was fair and equitable; he was skilled at holding to law, versed in precedent, and bright in the substance of governance; whenever officials broke the law, policy harmed the people, or matters of name and teaching fell short, he corrected them as the case required, with much benefit.

史臣曰：宗元饒夙夜匪懈，濟務益時。 The historiographer says: Zong Yuanrao never slackened from dawn to night, aiding affairs and benefiting the age.

瓊詳練譜諜，雅鑒人倫，先是，吏部尚書宗元饒卒，右僕射袁憲舉瓊，高宗未之用也，至是居之，號為稱職，後主甚委任焉。 Qiong knew genealogies and registers down to the last line and judged men with a quiet eye. When Minister of Personnel Zong Yuanrao died, right vice director Yuan Xian had recommended him, but Emperor Xuan had not yet appointed him. Now that he held the office, men said he filled it; Houzhu entrusted him without reserve.
