大順中，累遷至馬步都校，與李存孝擊張浚軍於平陽。 During the Dashun era he rose to commander of cavalry and infantry and, together with Li Cunxiao, attacked Zhang Jun's forces at Pingyang.

張浚之加兵於太原也，潞州小校馮霸殺其帥李克恭以城叛。 When Zhang Jun marched additional forces against Taiyuan, a Luzhou junior officer named Feng Ba killed his commander Li Kegong and turned the city in revolt.

初，汴人攻澤州，呼罕之曰：「相公常恃太原，輕絕大國，今張相公圍太原，葛司空已入潞府，旬日之內，沙陀無穴自處，相公何路求生耶！」 Early in the siege the Bian troops taunted Han Zhi: "You have always leaned on Taiyuan and scorned the great power. Chancellor Zhang now invests Taiyuan, and Vice Director Ge holds the Lu prefectural seat. Within ten days the Shatuo will have nowhere to hide—what path remains for you to survive?!"

梁祖與揆牙兵三千為紀綱，時揆為張浚副招討，所部萬人。 the Liang Founder furnished him three thousand guards as escort. Kui served as Zhang Jun's deputy suppression commander with ten thousand men.

十月，存孝引收潞州之師，圍張浚於平陽，營於趙城。 In the tenth month he led the Luzhou veterans to besiege Zhang Jun at Pingyang and pitched camp at Zhaocheng.

十一月，刺史張行恭棄城而去，張浚、韓建亦由含口而遁。 In the eleventh month Prefect Zhang Xinggong abandoned the city. Zhang Jun and Han Jian likewise escaped through Hankou Pass.

The Qi troops fled by night; he pursued them to Zhaocheng, joined the main army in attacking Pingyang, and took the city in thirteen days.

My elder grand-uncle Fu Gong was framed by Zhang Jun and fell afoul of the former dynasty, when powerful ministers constrained the throne and imperial orders could not be enforced. After Wang Xingyu was executed, an edict of grace publicly cleared the record, and that edict still survives. Your Excellency is a hereditary minister of our dynasty and well versed in precedent—how can you say his name has not been cleared!

先是，張浚自中書出為右僕射，梁祖判官高劭使梁祖蔭求一子出身官，省寺皆稱無例，浚曲為行之，指揮甚急，吏徒惶恐。 Earlier, when Zhang Jun left the Secretariat to become right vice director, Gao Shao, a judge on the staff of the Founder of Liang, had the Founder's yin request an initial appointment for a son. All the capital ministries and courts said there was no precedent, but Zhang Jun bent the rules to carry it out. His order was extremely urgent, and the clerks were terrified.

頃判云：「僕射未集郎官，赴省上指揮公事，且非南宮舊儀。」 Qing wrote in his decision: "The vice director has not assembled the bureau officials, yet goes to the ministry to deliver an ordered matter of public business—this is not the old procedure of the Southern Palace."

浚聞之，慚悚致謝，頃由是知名，梁祖亦獎之。 When Zhang Jun heard of this, he was ashamed and alarmed and offered his thanks. Qing thereby gained a reputation, and the Liang founder also commended him.

全忠阴赂浚，使持其议益坚，昭宗不得已，以浚为太原四面行营兵马都统，韩建为副使。 Quanzhong bribed Jun behind the scenes until his counsel could not be shaken. Zhaozong yielded and named Jun supreme commander of the Taiyuan campaign, with Han Jian as deputy.

十一月，浚及克用战于阴地，浚军三战三败，浚、建遁归。 In the eleventh month Jun met Keyong at Yindi, lost three engagements in a row, and fled with Han Jian.

三年正月，昭宗复以张浚为相，克用曰：「此朱全忠之谋也。」 In the first month of the third year Zhaozong again named Zhang Jun chief councillor. Keyong said, “Quanzhong is behind this.”

乃上表曰：「若陛下朝以浚为相，则臣将暮至阙廷！」 He memorialized the throne: “If Your Majesty names Jun chancellor at dawn, this servant will be at the palace gates by dusk!”

京师大恐，浚命遽止。 Chang’an panicked, and Jun’s appointment was revoked at once.
