然沃等皆寡識，桂蘭尤侈汰，與越官張登壇日事宴樂。 Yet Zhao Wo and his fellows were shallow men, and Huang Guilan was especially extravagant. He and the Vietnamese official Zhang Dengtan spent their days in feasting and pleasure.

登壇故通法，嗣以有郤洩其事。 Dengtan had long been in touch with the French; later, after a falling-out, he betrayed the fact.

上命延旭罷登壇，或囚而殺之，延旭以力不能制而止。 The throne ordered Yanxu to remove Dengtan, or to imprison and execute him, but Yanxu desisted because he lacked the power to enforce it.
