湖北巡撫曾國荃劾官文貪庸驕蹇，命尚書綿森、侍郎譚廷襄往按，坐動用捐款，議革職，詔念前勞，原其尚非貪污欺罔，優與保全，解總督，仍留大學士、伯爵，罰伯俸十年。 Hubei Governor Zeng Guoquan impeached Guan Wen for greed, incompetence, arrogance, and obstinacy. Ministers Miansen and Tan Tingxiang investigated and found misuse of donated funds. The court deliberated dismissal but, recalling his earlier service and finding no outright corruption, relieved him of the governorship while retaining his grand secretary title and earldom, with ten years' earldom stipend forfeited.

湖南巡撫駱秉章亦資國荃兵援吉安，兄弟皆會行間。 Hunan Governor Luo Bingzhang also supplied Zeng Guoquan's troops to relieve Ji'an, and the brothers all served together in the field.

國荃追賊至浮梁，江西列城次第复。 Zeng Guoquan pursued the rebels to Fuliang, and the cities of Jiangxi were retaken in succession.

國荃率諸軍圍安慶，與桐城軍相犄角。 Zeng Guoquan led the armies in besieging Anqing, forming a pincer with the Tongcheng force.

十一年八月，國荃遂克安慶。 In the eighth month of the eleventh year of Xianfeng, Zeng Guoquan at last took Anqing.

年十八從軍，初隸王珍部下，後從曾國荃援江西，隸吉字營。 He joined the army at eighteen, first under Wang Zhen, then with Zeng Guoquan’s relief force in Jiangxi, where he was assigned to the Jizi Battalion.

咸豐八年，戰吉安南門外，國荃受重創，臣典大呼挺矛進，追殺至永豐、新淦。 In the eighth year of Xianfeng, at the battle outside Ji’an’s south gate, Guoquan was badly wounded; Chendian charged forward spear in hand with a great shout and drove the pursuit all the way to Yongfeng and Xin’gan.

進規安慶，戰菱湖，逼賊屯，扼其北，國荃傷股墜馬，臣典馳救以歸。 During the advance on Anqing he fought at Linghu, pressed the rebel camp, and sealed off its northern side; when Guoquan was wounded in the thigh and thrown from his horse, Chendian rode to his rescue and carried him back.

同治元年，從國荃乘勝下沿江各城隘，進軍江寧，臣典會取丹陽鎮，奪秣陵關，以總兵記名。 In the first year of Tongzhi he followed Guoquan’s victorious drive along the Yangtze strongholds toward Jiangning, jointly took Danyang Town, and seized Moling Pass, earning nomination as regional commander.

軍中疫作，李秀成大舉來援，逼壘鏖戰，國荃督陣，砲傷頰，臣典與副將倪桂節力衛之，桂節陣亡。 When plague swept the army, Li Xiucheng marched up in strength; the rebels pressed the encampment in bitter fighting. Guoquan commanded from the front and took a shell wound to the cheek; Chendian and Deputy Commander Ni Guijie fought hard to shield him, and Guijie fell on the field.

臣典偵知賊糧未盡，諸軍苦戰力漸疲，謂國荃曰：「師老矣！ Chendian’s scouts reported that the rebels still had grain in store while the troops, worn down by hard fighting, were flagging; he told Guoquan, “Our men are exhausted!

六年，從曾國荃援江西，克安福、吉水、萬安諸縣。 In the sixth year he followed Guoquan’s relief of Jiangxi and helped capture Anfu, Jishui, and Wan’an.

同治元年，國荃循江東下，孚泗為前鋒，攻拔西梁山。 In the first year of Tongzhi, as Guoquan drove down the Yangtze, Fusi led the van and stormed West Liang Mountain.

九年，從曾國荃复景德鎮，复官，以守備補用。 In the ninth year he followed Guoquan in retaking Jingdezhen, regained his rank, and was posted as garrison commander.

遂從曾國荃部下，戰績始著。 He then served under Guoquan, and his record in battle first came to notice.

從國荃由皖東下，連奪沿江要隘，擢副將。 He followed Guoquan’s drive east from Anhui down the Yangtze, taking one strategic pass after another, and was made brigade commander.

國荃召諸將署名具軍令狀，洪章署第一，武明良第二，劉連捷第三，其他以次署畢，共得九人。 Guoquan called the generals to sign written military oaths; Hongzhang signed first, Wu Mingliang second, Liu Lianjie third, and the rest in order until nine names were on the list.

十四年，因病乞開缺，病痊，曾國荃調留兩江，洪章憑弔龍膊子山，祭死士瘞所，國荃為樹碑紀事。 In the fourteenth year he asked to resign on grounds of illness; when he recovered, Guoquan kept him in the Two Jiangs region; Hongzhang went to Longbozi Mountain to mourn the dead, offered sacrifice at their burial ground, and Guoquan set up a stele to commemorate it.

詔宣付史館，從優議卹，諡武慎，附祀曾國籓、國荃、胡林翼專祠。 The throne ordered the report sent to the Historiographical Institute, directed generous posthumous honors, and gave him the name Wushen, with a place in the dedicated shrines of Zeng Guofan, Guoquan, and Hu Linyi.

從曾國荃克吉安，擢同知，赴安徽助剿，十年，大捷於小池驛，擢知府。 He followed Guoquan in capturing Ji'an, was made subprefect, and went to Anhui to help suppress the rebels; in the tenth year he won a great victory at Xiaochi Post Station and was promoted to prefect.

光緒中，曾國荃撫山西，奏起連捷練軍包頭，從國荃移屯山海關，又從至江南治江防。 In the Guangxu era, when Guoquan became governor of Shanxi, he memorialized to recall Lianjie to drill troops at Baotou; Lianjie then followed him to Shanhaiguan and later to Jiangnan to oversee river defenses.

從曾國荃援江西，積功敘縣丞。 He followed Guoquan into Jiangxi and earned enough merit to be ranked as assistant county magistrate.

尋授福建汀漳龍兵備道，未之任，曾國荃疏調毓橘統湘軍赴湖北，捻匪竄擾黃州、安陸，毓橘進剿，戰比有功。 He was soon appointed military intendant of the Ting-Zhang-Long circuit in Fujian, but before he could take up the post Guoquan memorialized to send him to Hubei at the head of Hunan troops; when Nian raiders struck Huangzhou and Anlu, Yuju marched against them and won merit in fight after fight.

六年，改隸曾國荃軍，克安福，戰吉安。 In the sixth year he passed to Guoquan's command, captured Anfu, and fought at Ji'an.

論曰：洪秀全踞江寧十有餘年，曾國荃於蘇、浙未定之先，孤軍直搗，城大援眾，事勢綦難。 The historians remark: Hong Xiuquan had held Jiangning for more than a decade when Guoquan, before Jiangsu and Zhejiang were pacified, struck in with a single army—a vast city, massive relief, and odds as hard as they come.

咸豐六年，隸曾國荃軍，從援江西，克安福，從剿永新、太和、萬安、蓮花廳、龍泉，敘獎把總。 In 1856 he joined Zeng Guoquan's forces, marched to relieve Jiangxi, took Anfu, and helped clear Yongxin, Taihe, Wan'an, Lianhua subprefecture, and Longquan, for which he was commended and given the rank of platoon officer.

五年，曾國荃調松林率新募湘軍剿捻匪於德安，克應城、雲夢，复敗之皁河、楊澤。 In 1866 Zeng Guoquan sent Songlin with fresh Hunan recruits to fight the Nian at De'an. He took Yingcheng and Yunmeng and beat them again at Zaohe and Yangze.

咸豐六年，曾國荃赴援江西，招湜襄軍事，從克安福、萬安。 In 1856 Zeng Guoquan marched to aid Jiangxi, brought Shi into his staff, and took Anfu and Wan'an.

國荃奔喪去軍，湜代領其眾。 When Guoquan went home for his father's mourning, Shi took command of his troops.

十年，曾國荃圍安慶，使湜總軍事。 In 1860, when Zeng Guoquan besieged Anqing, he put Shi in charge of the campaign.

同治元年，從國荃攻江寧，建議先並力九洑洲，斷江北接濟，先後會諸軍擊走李秀成、李世賢援眾。 In 1862 he followed Guoquan in the assault on Nanjing, urged that they first concentrate on Jiufu Isle to sever supplies from north of the river, and helped drive off the relief columns of Li Xiucheng and Li Shixian.

光緒八年，兩江總督曾國荃奏調統水陸諸軍，兼治海防，駐軍吳淞。 In 1882 Governor-General Zeng Guoquan requested his transfer to command land and naval forces and coastal defense, with headquarters at Wusong.
