裕謙方代署兩江總督，疏言：「各省皆可議守，獨浙江必應速戰。」 Yu Qian, then acting governor-general of the Two Jiangs, wrote: "Every province may talk of defense, but Zhejiang must fight at once."

詔斥附和琦善，以兵砲未集，藉詞緩攻，致敵船遁去，褫協辦大學士、雙眼花翎，暫留兩江總督任，以裕謙代為欽差大臣督浙師。 An edict condemned him for echoing Qi Shan and delaying the attack until the enemy escaped. He lost his associate grand secretary rank and peacock feather but kept the Two Jiangs governorship for the time being. Yu Qian replaced him as imperial commissioner over the Zhejiang forces.

裕謙論劾伊里布遣家丁赴敵船事，命解任，帶張喜來京，下刑部訊鞫，褫職，遣戍軍台。 Yu Qian impeached Yi Libu for sending his servant to the enemy ships. He was removed from office, Zhang Xi was brought to the capital for trial at the Ministry of Justice, and Yi Libu was stripped of rank and sent to a military penal station.

未幾，定海、鎮海、寧波相繼陷，裕謙殉之。 Soon Dinghai, Zhenhai, and Ningbo fell in turn, and Yu Qian died defending the province.

英兵犯浙江，定海、鎮海及寧波府城相繼陷，裕謙死事，命為揚威將軍，督師往剿，都統哈哴阿、提督胡超為參贊，尋易侍郎文蔚、都統特依順副之。 When the British invaded Zhejiang and Dinghai, Zhenhai, and Ningbo fell one after another, Yu Qian died in the fighting. Yijing was named Campaign General to lead the punitive force, with Ha'er'a and Hu Chao as deputies; before long Wen Wei and Te Yishun replaced them.

裕謙來督師，疏言步云不可恃，未及易而英兵猝至，复陷定海，三鎮戰歿。 Yu Qian arrived to command and reported that Buyun could not be trusted; before he could be replaced the British struck again, Dinghai fell, and three regional commanders were killed.

步雲號宿將，實巧猾無戰志，又嗛裕謙剛愎，將戰，裕謙召與盟神誓師，託疾不赴，且獻緩敵之策。 Buyun had a veteran's reputation but was sly and unwilling to fight, and he resented Yu Qian's stubbornness. When battle neared, Yu Qian called him to swear an oath before the troops; Buyun pleaded illness, stayed away, and urged delay instead.

步雲疏聞，委敗於裕謙。 In his report Buyun blamed the defeat on Yu Qian.

裕謙既歿，其妻赴京訟之。 After Yu Qian's death his widow went to Beijing to accuse Buyun.

海疆兵事起，從總督裕謙赴浙江。 When war broke out on the coast, he accompanied Governor Yuqian to Zhejiang.

裕謙死難，冕牽連遣戍伊犁，既而林則徐亦至戍，議興屯田，冕佐治水利有功，赦還。 After Yuqian died in battle, Huang was implicated and exiled to Yili; when Lin Zexu was sent to the same frontier and colonization was proposed, Huang helped manage the irrigation works with distinction and was eventually pardoned and allowed to return.
