○蔡王智積 ○ Prince of Cai Zhiji

蔡王智積，高祖弟整之子也。 Prince of Cai Zhiji was the son of Gaozu's younger brother Zheng.

以智積襲焉。 Zhiji succeeded to the title.

尋拜智積為開府儀同三司，授同州刺史，儀衛資送甚盛。 Zhiji was soon appointed Grand Preceptorate with Protocol Equal to the Three Excellencies and made Governor of Tong Prefecture, with a splendid escort and lavish provisions for his journey.

昔高祖龍潛時，景王與高祖不睦，其太妃尉氏又與獨孤皇后不相諧，以是智積常懷危懼，每自貶損。 In earlier days, when Gaozu was still rising to power, Prince Jing had been on bad terms with him, and Prince Jing's consort of the Yu clan had clashed with Empress Dugu. For this reason Zhiji lived in constant fear and continually humbled himself.

人或勸智積治產業者，智積曰：「昔平原露朽財帛，苦其多也。 When someone urged Zhiji to build up his estates, he said, "Long ago the Prince of Pingyuan displayed his rotting stores of silk and gold, lamenting that he had too much.

或問其故，智積答曰：「卿非知我者。」 When someone asked why, Zhiji replied, "You do not understand me at all."

煬帝即位，滕王綸、衛王集並以讒構得罪，高陽公智明亦以交遊奪爵，智積逾懼。 When Emperor Yang came to the throne, Prince of Teng Lun and Prince of Wei Ji were both convicted on charges of slanderous plotting; Duke of Gaoyang Zhiming likewise lost his title for improper associations, and Zhiji grew ever more fearful.

及楊玄感作亂，自東都引軍而西，智積謂官屬曰：「玄感聞大軍將至，欲西圖關中。 When Yang Xuangan rebelled and led his army west from the Eastern Capital, Zhiji told his officials, "Xuangan has heard that the main army is approaching and intends to march west and seize Guanzhong.

及玄感軍至城下，智積登陴詈辱之，玄感怒甚，留攻之。 When Xuangan's army reached the walls, Zhiji mounted the battlements and hurled insults at him. Xuangan was furious and remained to besiege the city.

城門為賊所燒，智積乃更益火，賊不得入。 The rebels set the city gate ablaze, so Zhiji added more fuel to the fire and the rebels could not enter.

帝時疏薄骨肉，智積每不自安，及遇患，不呼醫。 The emperor had grown cold toward his kinsmen, and Zhiji had long lived in anxiety. When he fell ill, he did not call for a physician.

蔡王將沒，自以為幸。 when Prince of Cai was about to die, he considered himself fortunate.
