平原鄃縣女子孫氏男玉者，夫為靈縣民所殺。
Sun Nanyu, a woman of Suxian in Pingyuan, had a husband who was murdered by a man from Ling County.
追執讎人，男玉欲自殺之，其弟止而不聽。
They seized the killer in pursuit; Nanyu wished to kill him herself, but her younger brother tried to stop her and she would not listen.
男玉曰：「女人出適，以夫為天，當親自復雪，云何假人之手！」
Nanyu said, "A woman who marries takes her husband as her heaven; I must avenge him myself—how could I leave it to another's hand!"
顯祖詔曰：「男玉重節輕身，以義犯法，緣情定罪，理在可原，其特恕之。」
Emperor Xianzu issued an edict: "Nanyu prized integrity above her own life and broke the law in the name of righteousness. Given the circumstances, she deserves mercy—let her be specially pardoned."
