唐雖服九章服，當時司禮少常伯孫茂道言：'諸臣之章雖殊，然飾龍名袞，尊卑相亂，請三公服鷩冕八章為宜。 Tang officials wore nine emblems, yet Vice Minister of Rites Sun Maodao argued: 'Though ministers' emblems differ, dragon ornament still makes all robes alike and blurs rank; the three dukes should wear pheasant crown with eight emblems.'

請依漢、唐故事，祭服冕旒畫章，然君臣冕服雖章數各殊而俱飾龍名袞，而唐孫茂道已有尊卑相亂之論。 They proposed Han and Tang sacrificial dress with tasseled crowns and painted emblems, yet minister and ruler alike bore dragons and were called robe—exactly the rank confusion Sun Maodao had criticized in Tang.
