生而母沒。 His mother died when he was born.

年數歲，問母所在，家人告以死生之分，敷雖童蒙，便有思慕之色。 When he was only a few years old he asked where his mother was; the family explained that she had died; even as a small child Fu's face showed mourning and longing.

年十許歲，求母遺物，而散施已盡，唯得一畫扇，乃緘錄之，每至感思，輒開笥流涕。 Around ten he searched for keepsakes of his mother, but nearly everything had been given away; only one painted fan remained, which he wrapped and stored; whenever grief overtook him he opened the case and wept.
