事聞，上怒甚，命發健銳、火器兩營，黑龍江、吉林、伊犁額魯特兵五千，授阿桂定西將軍，明亮、豐升額副將軍，舒常參贊大臣，整師再出。 When the emperor learned of this, he was furious. He sent the Jianrui and Firearms camps and five thousand Oirat troops from Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Yili, made A Gui Pacification General of the West with Mingliang and Fengsheng'e as deputies and Shuchang as assisting commander, and ordered the army out again under a fresh command.

用番人木塔爾策，分師由中、南兩路進，潛軍登北山巔，遂取美諾，明亮等亦克僧格宗來會，凡七日，小金川平。 Following a strategy proposed by Mutar, a local tribesman, they split the force along the central and southern routes while secretly sending troops to the northern summit, then seized Meinuo. Mingliang's column also took Sengge Stockade and linked up. Within seven days, Lesser Jinchuan was subdued.

而明亮出南路，阻於庚額山； Mingliang, coming up from the south, was held up at Geng'e Mountain.

阿桂令移軍，冒雨破宜喜，與明亮軍隔河相望。 A Gui shifted his forces, broke through Yixi in the rain, and took up a position facing Mingliang's army across the river.

以千總從副將軍明亮徵金川有功，積官至越巂營參將。 Serving as a company commander (qianzong) under Vice General Mingliang in the Jinchuan campaign, he distinguished himself and rose through successive promotions to regimental commander of the Yuexi Garrison.

金川酋以番僧诇軍事，芝元言於明亮曰：「軍事每為賊知，非去其諜，滅賊無日矣。」 The Jinchuan chieftain used tribal monks to spy on the army. Zhiyuan told Mingliang: "The enemy always knows our moves. Unless we cut off their intelligence, we will never defeat them."

會大風雪，明亮命芝元率數十人偽若以他事出者，宿番僧寺中。 During a blizzard, Mingliang ordered Zhiyuan to take several dozen men, pretending to be out on other business, and lodge at the tribal monks' temple.

命陳諸將優劣，密疏言：「明亮知兵而罔實效； Ordered to assess the commanders, he submitted a secret memorial: "Mingliang knows warfare but produces no real results;

明亮劾永保、慶成避賊，下松筠逮治。 Mingliang impeached Yongbao and Qingcheng for shirking the rebels; Song Yun was ordered to arrest and try them.

永保亦與荊州將軍興肇訐明亮誑報軍功，詔並褫職，遣尚書那彥成赴陝會鞫。 Yongbao also joined Jingzhou General Xingzhao in accusing Mingliang of falsifying battle reports; an edict stripped them all of office and sent Minister Nayancheng to Shaanxi for a joint investigation.

會明亮已擊斃張漢潮，松筠請緩其獄，又請留撒拉爾回兵，令慶成率以協剿，帝不允。 By then Mingliang had already killed Zhang Hanchao in battle; Song Yun asked that his trial be eased and also requested that Salar Muslim troops be kept under Qingcheng for joint operations—the emperor refused.
