二年，加侍中、開府儀同三司，尚孝靜帝妹馮翊長公主，時年十二，神情儁爽，便若成人。 In the second year he was made Palace Attendant and Grand Lord Equal to Three Imperator and married Princess Chang of Fengyi, Emperor Xiaojing's sister. He was twelve, handsome and spirited, already bearing himself like a man.

七月戊戌，魏帝詔以文襄為使持節、大丞相、都督中外諸軍、錄尚書事、大行臺、渤海王。 In the seventh month, on wuxu day, the Eastern Wei emperor issued an edict that Gao Cheng be Bearer of Credentials, Grand Chancellor, Commander-in-Chief of All Armies at Home and Abroad, Recorder of Affairs of the Masters of Writing, Grand Mobile Headquarters, and Prince of Bohai.

壬寅，魏帝詔太原公洋攝理軍國，遣中使敦喻。 On renyin day the emperor issued an edict that Duke of Taiyuan Gao Yang administer military and state affairs and sent a palace envoy to urge him earnestly.

魏帝詔曰：「旣朝野攸憑，安危所系，不得令遂本懷，須有權奪，可復前大將軍，餘如故。」 The emperor issued an edict, "Since court and countryside rely on you and safety hangs upon you, I cannot let you follow your wish; authority must be taken by necessity. You may resume your former rank of Grand General; the rest remains as before."

壬申，東魏主與王獵於鄴東，馳逐如飛。 On renshen the Eastern Wei emperor hunted with Gao Cheng east of Ye, galloping as if in flight.

監衛都督烏那羅受工伐從後呼曰：「天子莫走馬，大將軍怒。」 Supervisory Guard Commander Wunaluo Shougongfa shouted from behind, "Your Majesty, do not gallop—the Grand General will be angry!"

王嘗侍飲，舉大觴曰：「臣澄勸陛下酒。」 Once, while attending him at drink, Gao Cheng raised a great goblet and said, "Your servant Cheng urges Your Majesty to drink."

東魏主不悅曰：「自古無不亡之國，朕亦何用如此生！」 The Eastern Wei emperor said, displeased, "Since antiquity no state has failed to perish—why should I cling so to life!"

東魏主賜季舒彩，季舒未敢即受，啟之於王，王使取一段。 The Eastern Wei emperor bestowed silk on Jishu; Jishu dared not accept at once and reported to Gao Cheng, who told him to take one bolt.

東魏主以四百疋與之，曰：「亦一段耳。」 The Eastern Wei emperor gave him four hundred bolts and said, "That too is only one bolt."

東魏主不堪憂辱，詠謝靈運詩曰：「韓亡子房奮，秦帝魯連恥。 Unable to bear the anguish and humiliation, the Eastern Wei emperor recited a poem of Xie Lingyun: "When Han perished Zhang Liang rose in zeal; before the Qin emperor Lu Zhong felt shame.

文襄敬皇后元氏，魏孝靜帝之姊也。 Reverent Empress Yuan of Wenxiang was the elder sister of Emperor Xiaojing of Wei.

初生河間王孝琬，時文襄為世子，三日而孝靜帝幸世子第，贈錦彩及布帛萬匹。 When she first bore Prince Xiaowan of Hejian, Gao Cheng was then heir; on the third day Emperor Xiaojing visited the heir's residence and bestowed brocades, silks, and cloth in ten thousand bolts.

魏帝便斂容曰：「此事推挹已久，謹當遜避。」 The Wei emperor composed himself and said, "This has long been pressed upon me — I shall respectfully yield."

卽付楊愔進於魏靜帝。 It was at once given to Yang Yin to present to Emperor Jing of Wei.

魏靜云：「安置朕何所，復若為去？」 Emperor Jing said, "Where will you lodge me — and how am I to leave?"

魏靜帝於是下御坐，就東廊，口詠範蔚宗《後漢書贊》云：「獻生不辰，身播國屯，終我四百，永作虞賓。」 Emperor Jing of Wei stepped down from the throne, went to the eastern gallery, and recited Fan Ye's encomium from the History of Later Han: "Xian was born untimely, his person cast upon the state's ordeal — ending our four hundred years, forever guest of Yu."

魏靜帝曰：「人念遺簪弊屨，欲與六宮別，可乎？」 Emperor Jing said, "Men cherish even a lost hairpin or worn shoes — may I bid farewell to the six palaces?"

魏靜帝登車出萬春門，直長趙道德在車中陪侍，百官在門外拜辭。 Emperor Jing mounted his carriage and went out the Wanchun Gate; chief controller Zhao Daode attended him in the carriage; the hundred officials bowed farewell outside the gate.

魏帝問僕射崔暹、尚書楊愔等曰：「自古甘露之瑞，漢、魏多少，可各言往代所降之處，德化感致所由。」 The Wei emperor asked vice director Cui Xian, minister Yang Yin, and others, "Since antiquity the auspice of sweet dew — in Han and Wei, how often? Tell where it fell in past ages and by what moral transformation it was drawn down."
