少從硃次琦遊，博通經史，好公羊家言，言孔子改制，倡以孔子紀年，尊孔保教，先聚徒講學。 In youth he studied under Zhu Ciqi, mastered the classics and histories broadly, favored the Gongyang school, spoke of Confucius's institutional reforms, advocated dating by Confucius's era, honored Confucius and protected the teaching, and first gathered disciples to lecture.
