雁門人周續之隱居廬山，儒學著稱，永初中，徵詣京師，開館以居之。 Zhou Xuzhi of Yanmen, a celebrated Confucian recluse on Mount Lu, was summoned to the capital during Yongchu (420–422) and given a lecture hall to live in.

上使問續之三義，續之雅仗辭辯，延之每折以簡要。 The emperor set him to examine Xuzhi on the Three Meanings. Xuzhi leaned on his eloquence, but Yanzhi repeatedly cut him down with terse, pointed replies.

既連挫續之，上又使還自敷釋，言約理暢，莫不稱善。 After he had repeatedly bested Xuzhi, the emperor had him explain his own views as well; his speech was spare yet lucid, and everyone praised him.
