琅邪太守趙貢行縣，見宣，甚說其能。 When the governor of Langye, Zhao Gong, toured his districts and met Xue Xuan, he was so impressed by his talent that he took him along.

宣除趙貢兩子為史。 He took Zhao Gong's two sons onto his staff as secretaries.
