張耀，字靈光，上谷昌平人也。
Zhang Yao, styled Lingguang, came from Changping in Shanggu.
耀少而貞謹，頗曉史職。
From youth Yao was upright and careful and knew the work of records and administration well.
及軌除瀛、冀二州刺史，又以耀為軌諮議參軍。
When Gui was made inspector of Ying and Ji, Yao again served as his consulting staff officer.
後為御史所劾，州府僚佐及軌左右以贓罪掛網者百有餘人，唯耀清白獨免。
Later the censors impeached the case. More than a hundred prefectural staff and men close to Gui were caught in the net on corruption charges; only Yao was clear and escaped alone.
諸有賜給，常使耀典之。
Whenever there were grants and gifts Yao was usually put in charge.
顯祖曾因近出，令耀居守。
Gao Yang once went out on a short trip and left Yao to hold the palace.
帝夜還，耀不時開門，勒兵嚴備。
The emperor returned at night. Yao did not open the gates at once but drilled the troops and stood ready.
耀以夜深，真偽難辯，須火至面識，門乃可開，於是獨出見帝。
Yao said that in the deep of night true and false were hard to tell; he had to see the emperor's face by torchlight before the gates could open. He therefore went out alone to meet him.
乃使耀前開門，然後入，深嗟賞之，賜以錦采。
He then had Yao go forward and open the gates before he entered, praised him deeply, and bestowed brocade silks.
肅宗輔政，累遷秘書監。
When Emperor Suzong assisted the government Yao rose repeatedly to director of the palace library.
耀歷事累世，奉職恪勤，咸見親待，未嘗有過。
Yao served through successive reigns. He was diligent and careful in office, was trusted and treated closely in each reign, and never committed a fault.
趙彥深嘗謂耀曰：「君研尋《左氏》，豈求服虔、杜預之紕繆邪？」
Zhao Yanshen once said to Yao, "In studying the Zuo Tradition, are you trying to find errors in Fu Qian and Du Yu?"
耀曰：「何為其然乎？
Yao said, "Why would that be so?
天統元年，世祖臨朝，耀奏事，遇暴疾，仆於御前。
In the first year of Tiantong, while Shizu was holding court, Yao was presenting business when he suffered a sudden illness and collapsed before the emperor.
帝下座臨視，呼數聲不應。
The emperor came down from his seat to look over him and called several times, but Yao did not respond.
詔稱耀忠貞平直，溫恭廉慎。
The edict praised Yao as loyal and steadfast, fair and upright, warm, respectful, incorrupt, and careful.
贈開府儀同三司、尚書右僕射、燕州刺史，諡曰貞簡。
He was posthumously granted Opening Office with Honors Equal to the Three Excellencies, Right Vice Director of the Department of State Affairs, and Inspector of Yan Province; his posthumous title was Zhenjian.
伯德之慟哭伏屍，靈光之拒關駐蹕，有古人風焉。
Bode's wailing over the corpse, Lingguang's holding the pass and halting the carriage — therein was the manner of the ancients.
贊曰：纂、亮、耀、起，徐遠、纮、峻，奉日高升，淩風遠振。
Praise says: Zuan, Liang, Yao, Qi, Xu Yuan, Hong, Jun — they rose with the sun and shook the wind from afar.
