高宗即位，莊親王允祿、果親王允禮、鄂爾泰、張廷玉輔政，號「總理王大臣」。 When the Qianlong Emperor took the throne, Prince Zhuang Yunlu, Prince Guo Yunli, Ortai, and Zhang Tingyu formed the regency styled the 'Chief Ministers in General Affairs.'

是時鄂爾泰、張廷玉負夾輔之重，然居中用事為天子喉舌，厥惟訥親，繼之者傅恆也。 Ortai and Zhang Tingyu assisted the throne, but the emperor's voice in council was first Neqin, then Fu Heng.

大功告竣，朕欲如張廷玉例，領以世職。 With the great achievement completed, I intended, following the precedent of Zhang Tingyu, to grant him a hereditary office.

會大學士張廷玉乞歸失上指，因獎藻，謂其知君臣休戚相關大義，以媿廷玉，加藻內閣學士銜，賜人葠二斤，命歸養母。 At the time Grand Secretary Zhang Tingyu's request to retire had displeased the Emperor; the Emperor therefore praised Zao, saying that he understood the great principle that ruler and minister share weal and woe alike, so as to shame Zhang Tingyu. He granted Zao the title of Grand Secretary of the Grand Secretariat, bestowed two jin of ginseng, and ordered him home to care for his mother.
