宇文化及弑逆之際，倓覺變，欲入奏，恐露其事，因與梁公蕭钜、千牛宇文皛等穿芳林門側水竇而入。 When Yuwen Huaji carried out his regicide, Tan sensed the uprising. He wished to go in and report to the emperor but feared betraying his purpose, so with Duke of Liang Xiao Ju, Palace Attendant Yuwen Hao, and others he entered through the water sluice beside the Fanglin Gate.

钜小名藏，煬帝甚昵之，以為千牛，與宇文皛出入宮掖，伺察內外。 Ju, childhood name Zang, was greatly favored by Emperor Yang. He was made an attendant of the Thousand-Ox Guard and, with Yuwen Xiao, went in and out of the inner palace, watching affairs within and without.
