幼從元裕學，年十五，以儒生中詞賦選，河東宣撫司又舉楫賢良方正孝廉。 As a youth he studied under Yuan Yu. At fifteen he passed the literary composition examination as a Confucian scholar, and the Hedong Pacification Commission also recommended him as a filial and upright candidate of outstanding talent.
