桂星少從同縣吳定學，後師姚鼐，詩古文並有法，著有進奉文及詩集，又嘗用司空圖說輯唐詩品。 As a young man Guixing studied under his fellow townsman Wu Ding and later studied under Yao Nai. Both his poetry and his ancient-style prose were accomplished by rule. He wrote memorial essays for presentation at court and a poetry collection, and he once compiled grades of Tang poetry according to Sikong Tu's critical theory.

嘗從同縣姚鼐遊，能文章。 He had studied under his fellow townsman Yao Nai and was himself a capable writer.

瑩師事從祖鼐，不好經生章句，務通大意，見諸施行。 Yao studied under his collateral ancestor Yao Nai, cared little for pedantic textual scholarship, sought the larger meaning, and put it into practice.

與姚鼐交最深，論最契，當時書名，鼐不及文治之遠播； His closest friend and keenest intellectual companion was Yao Nai; at the time Yao's calligraphic fame did not travel as widely as Wenzhi's;

後包世臣極推鼐書，與劉墉並列上品，名轉出文治上。 later Bao Shichen championed Yao's calligraphy, ranking it with Liu Yong's among the finest, and Yao's reputation eventually eclipsed Wenzhi's.
