翰林院侍講學士顏宗儀疏言：「鄉團之設，原以百姓之財力，衛百姓之身家，果能眾志成城，同仇敵愾，即一舉、貢、生、監，足以統領之，無俟大員為之督率。 Hanlin Lecturer Yan Zongyi argued: 'Village militia were meant to use the people's resources to protect their lives and property. When the community truly unites with shared resolve, a single juren, tribute student, licentiate, or supervising student can lead them—no high official is needed.
