孝武初，青州刺史顏師伯出鎮，臺差度領幢主送之。 Early in the reign of Emperor Xiaowu of Song, Yan Shibo took up the Qingzhou garrison; the capital sent Du as banner chief on the escort.

索虜寇青州，師伯遣度領軍與虜戰於沙溝杜梁，度身破陣，大捷。 Northerners struck Qingzhou; Shibo sent Du at the head of a column to meet them at Shagou Duliang. Du tore the enemy line apart himself and carried the day.

師伯板爲己輔國府參軍。 Shibo raised him to an aide on his Supporting-the-State command staff.

師伯啓孝武稱度氣力弓馬竝絕人，帝召還充左右。 Shibo memorialized Emperor Xiaowu that Du's strength, bow-work, and horsemanship stood above other men; the throne recalled him to the inner guard.

見度身形黑壯，謂師伯曰：「真健物也。」 When he saw Du's dark, thick-set frame, he told Shibo: "What a bull of a man."

十二月乙酉，以尚書右僕射顏師伯為尚書僕射。 On yiyou day in the twelfth month, Yan Shibo, Right Vice Director of the Masters of Writing, was confirmed as Vice Director of the Masters of Writing.

庚午，以尚書僕射顏師伯為尚書左僕射，[12]吏部尚書王景文為尚書右僕射。 On gengwu day Yan Shibo was promoted to Left Vice Director of the Masters of Writing, [12] and Wang Jingwen, Director of the Ministry of Personnel, was made Right Vice Director.

癸酉，帝自率宿衞兵，誅太宰江夏王義恭、尚書令驃騎大將軍柳元景、尚書左僕射顏師伯、[13]廷尉劉德願。 On guiyou day the emperor personally led the palace guard and executed Grand Preceptor Liu Yigong, Prince of Jiangxia; Director of the Masters of Writing and General of Agile Cavalry Liu Yuanjing; Left Vice Director Yan Shibo; [13] and Director of Justice Liu Deyuan.

大明元年，復為侍中，領射聲校尉，封興平縣子，食邑五百戶，事在顏師伯傳。 In the first year of Daming, he was again made Palace Attendant and concurrently Commandant of the Archers' Corps, enfeoffed as Viscount of Xingping with a fief of five hundred households; the affair is treated in Yan Shibo's biography.

其年，皇太子冠，上臨宴東宮，愍孫勸顏師伯酒，師伯不飲，愍孫因相裁辱，師伯見寵於上，上常嫌愍孫以寒素凌之，因此發怒，出為海陵太守。 That year, when the Heir Apparent received the capping ceremony, the emperor attended a feast at the Eastern Palace; Min Sun urged Yan Shibo to drink wine, but Shibo refused; Min Sun therefore abused and humiliated him; Shibo was favored by the emperor, who had often resented Min Sun for lording over him on account of his humble origins; for this the emperor became angry and sent Min Sun out as Governor of Hailing.
