性抗厲守道，而文藻非優，嘗與同舍顏蕘、錢珝俱秉筆，見蕘、珝贍速，草制數十，無妨譚笑，而沂自愧。 Firm and principled by nature, he was not a gifted stylist. Once, drafting edicts alongside colleagues Yan Rao and Qian Pei, he watched them turn out dozens of documents with ease, chatting and laughing all the while, and was mortified by his own slowness.
