嗣雖修儒學，然貴老嚴之術。 Ban Si pursued Confucian texts yet revered the Daoist teachings of Laozi and Yan Junping.

桓生欲借其書，嗣報曰：「若夫嚴子者，絕聖棄智，修生保真，清虛澹泊，歸之自然，獨師友造化，而不為世俗所役者也。 When Huan Sheng wished to borrow his books, Ban Si replied, "As for Master Yan, he cut off sagehood and discarded cleverness, cultivated life and guarded the genuine, was clear, empty, and still, and returned to the natural; he took only creation as teacher and friend and was not enslaved by the vulgar world.
