謝朏弟子覽 Xie Fei; his nephew Lan

覽字景滌，朏弟綍之子也。 Lan, styled Jingdi, was the son of Fei's younger brother Fu.

高祖爲大司馬，召補東閤祭酒，遷相國戶曹。 When Gaozu was Grand Marshal, he summoned Lan to fill the post of libationer of the Eastern Lodge; Lan was then transferred to the household section of the Chancellor of State.

天監元年，爲中書侍郎，掌吏部事，頃之卽真。 In Tianjian 1, Lan became Gentleman of the Secretariat and handled Personnel affairs; before long he took the office in his own right.

覽爲人美風神，善辭令，高祖深器之。 Lan had a handsome presence and gift for speech; the Founding Emperor prized him greatly.

覽頗樂酒，因醼席與散騎常侍蕭琛辭相詆毀，爲有司所奏。 Lan loved wine; at a feast he and Regular Attendant Xiao Chen traded insults, and the authorities memorialized against them.

高祖以覽年少不直，出爲中權長史。 The Emperor, holding Lan young and not upright, sent him out as Central Guards chief clerk.

九年夏，山賊吳承伯破宣城郡，餘黨散入新安，叛吏鮑敘等與合，攻沒黟、歙諸縣，進兵擊覽。 In the ninth year's summer, bandit Wu Chengbo broke Xuancheng; survivors fled into Xin'an; rebel clerks Bao Xu and others joined, took Yi and She, and marched on Lan.

覽遣郡丞周興嗣于錦沙立塢拒戰，不敵，遂棄郡奔會稽。 Lan sent assistant Zhou Xingsi to fortify Jinsha and fight; defeated, he abandoned the commandery and fled to Kuaiji.

臺軍平山寇，覽復還郡，左遷司徒諮議參軍、仁威長史、行南徐州事，五兵尚書。 When the army pacified the bandits, Lan returned; then he was demoted to Masters of Works adviser, Humaneness and Might chief clerk, acting South Xuzhou, and Five Armaments minister.

覽自祖至孫，三世居選部，當世以爲榮。 From grandfather through grandson, three generations held the personnel bureau—the age took it for honor.

覽未到郡，睦之子弟來迎，覽逐去其船，杖吏爲通者。 Before Lan arrived, Muzhi's kin came to meet him; he drove off their boats and whipped the clerks who had let them through.

郡境多劫，爲東道患，覽下車肅然，一境清謐。 Robbery was rife and troubled the eastern roads; when Lan took office the whole district grew orderly and still.

初，齊明帝及覽父綍、東海徐孝嗣，並爲吳興，號稱名守，覽皆欲過之！ Once Qi Mingdi, Lan's father Fu, and Donghai's Xu Xiaosi had all ruled Wuxing as famed administrators—Lan meant to outdo them all!

昔覽在新安頗聚斂，至是遂稱廉潔，時人方之王懷祖。 Once in Xin'an he had been grasping; now he was called incorrupt, and the age compared him to Wang Huainzu.

覽終能善政，君子韙之。 Lan could govern well to the end; gentlemen praised it.

Book of Liang, Chapter 37Volume 37: Xie Ju; He Jingrong · 4 passages

謝舉，字言揚，中書令覽之弟也。 Xie Ju, whose courtesy name was Yanyang, was the younger brother of Xie Lan, Director of the Palace Secretariat.

幼好學，能清言，與覽齊名。 As a boy he loved study, excelled at pure conversation, and was as famous as his brother Lan.

世人爲之語曰：「王有養、炬，謝有覽、舉。」 People said of them: “The Wangs have Yang and Ju; the Xies have Lan and Ju.”

嘗侍宴華林園，高祖訪舉於覽，覽對曰：「識藝過臣甚遠，惟飲酒不及於臣。」 Once at a banquet in Huaglin Garden the Founding Emperor asked Lan about Ju; Lan answered: “His learning and skill far exceed mine—only in wine he cannot match me.”
