是時益州逆賊馬相、趙祗等於綿竹縣自號黃巾，合聚疲役之民，一二日中得數千人，先殺綿竹令李升，吏民翕集，合萬餘人，便前破雒縣，攻益州殺儉，又到蜀郡、犍為，旬月之間，破壞三郡。 About then rebels Ma Xiang and Zhao Qi in Yizhou raised the Yellow Turban banner at Mianzhu, sweeping up worn-out conscripts. Within a day or two they had thousands of followers; they slew Magistrate Li Sheng, and officials and townsfolk rallied until their host passed ten thousand. They took Luoxian, struck down Inspector Xi Jian of Yizhou, then swept through Shu and Qianwei—three commanderies ruined inside a month.

會益州刺史郤儉賦斂煩擾，謠言遠聞，儉，郤正祖也。 About then Yizhou Inspector Xi Jian was grinding the people with heavy levies until rumor of it spread far; Xi Jian was an ancestor of Xi Zheng.

出為監軍使者，領益州牧，封陽城侯，當收儉治罪； He was sent out as supervisory army envoy with the governorship of Yizhou, enfeoffed as Marquis of Yangcheng, and charged to seize Xi Jian and bring him to justice;

前刺史劉雋、郤儉皆貪殘放濫，取受狼籍，元元無聊，呼嗟充野，焉到便收攝行法，以示萬姓，勿令漏露，使癰疽決潰，為國生梗。 His predecessors Liu Juan and Xi Jian had been rapacious and lawless, their extortion so rampant that the people were destitute and the countryside rang with lament. Yan was to arrest them at once, enforce the law before the people, and drain the abscess before it festered into a national crisis.
