大學士王鐸深知之，鐸罷相失職，樞亦久之不調。 Grand Academician Wang Duo thought highly of him. When Duo lost the chief ministry and fell from power, Shu too went long without a new appointment.

中和初，王鐸復見用，以舊恩徙為鄭滑掌書記、檢校司封郎中，賜金紫，入朝歷兵、吏二員外郎。 Early in the Zhonghe era Wang Duo returned to power. Out of old friendship Shu was made secretary to the Zheng-Hua command and investigating director in the Bureau of Enfeoffments, granted the gold-and-purple insignia, and after returning to court served as vice director in the ministries of War and Personnel.

王鐸自滑移鎮滄州，過魏郊，從訓見其女妓，利之，先伏兵於漳南高雞泊，俟鐸之至，圍而害之，掠其所有。 When Wang Duo was transferred from Hua to Cangzhou and passed through Wei territory, Congxun saw his female entertainers and coveted them. He hid troops at Gaojipo south of Zhang, waited for Duo to arrive, surrounded and killed him, and plundered everything he had.

魏人素知鐸名望，議者惜之，而罪從訓。 The people of Wei had long respected Duo's standing; public opinion mourned him and condemned Congxun.

唐乾符中，木星入南斗，數夕不退，諸道都統晉國公王鐸觀之，問諸知星者吉凶安在，咸曰：「金火土犯斗即為災，唯木當為福耳！」 In the Qianfu era Jupiter entered the Southern Dipper and held there night after night. Wang Duo, Prince of Jin and overall commander of the circuits, watched it and asked the astrologers what it portended. All agreed: "Metal, fire, or earth in the Dipper means disaster—only wood should mean good fortune!"

鐸召而質之，岡曰：「惟木為福神，當以帝王占之。 Duo called him in and pressed him. Gang said: "Wood alone is the star of blessing—it must be read as the omen of an emperor.

一日，又密召岡，因堅請語其詳，至於三四，岡辭不獲。 Another day Duo summoned him in private and pressed him again and again—three or four times—until Gang could not refuse.

鐸乃屏去左右，岡曰：「木星入斗，帝王之兆也。 Duo sent attendants away. Gang said: "Jupiter in the Dipper is the sign of a Son of Heaven.

鐸聞之，不復有言。 Duo heard him out and said nothing further.

敬方子縠，廣明中，為晉公王鐸都統判官，以收復功為諫議大夫。 Jingfang's son Gu, during the Guangming era, served as judge on the military commission staff of Duke of Jin Wang Duo and, for his part in the recovery campaign, was made remonstrating censor.

琪即縠之子也，年十三，詞賦詩頌，大為王鐸所知，然亦疑其假手。 Qi was Gu's son. At thirteen his rhapsodies, poems, and eulogies greatly impressed Wang Duo, though Duo also suspected that someone else was writing them for him.

一日，鐸召縠宴於公署，密遣人以《漢祖得三傑賦》題就其第試之，琪援筆立成。 One day Duo summoned Gu to a banquet at his headquarters and secretly sent someone to Qi's home with the topic 'Rhapsody on the Han Ancestor Obtaining the Three Outstanding Men.' Qi took up his brush and finished the piece on the spot.

鐸覽而駭之，曰：「此兒大器也，將擅文價。」 Duo read it and was astonished. "This boy is destined for greatness," he said. "He will come to set the price of letters."

〈（《太平廣記》：琪總角謁鐸。 (According to the 《Extensive Records of the Taiping Era》: While still a boy, Qi paid a call on Wang Duo.

鐸顧曰：「適蜀中詔到，用夏州拓跋思恭為收復都統，可作一詩否？」 Duo turned and said, "An edict has just arrived from Shu appointing Tuoba Sigong of Xia Prefecture recovery grand marshal. Can you compose a poem?"

鐸益奇之，因執琪手曰：「此真鳳手也。」 Duo was still more amazed and, taking Qi's hand, said, "These are truly the hands of a phoenix."

及威殺尚君長，賊熾結，益不制，乃以王鐸鎮荊南，為諸道都統。 When Wei killed Shang Junzhang the rebels grew fiercer and less controllable; Wang Duo was stationed at Jingnan as overall commander of all circuits.

攜素厚高駢，屬令立功，乃固不可巢請，又欲激巢使戰而敗鐸，因授率府率。 Xie was close to Gao Pian and wished him merit; he firmly opposed Chao's request, also hoping to provoke Chao to fight and defeat Duo, and appointed him Rate-Setting Colonel.

及鐸失守，以駢代之，即按關東諸將為鐸、畋所任者，悉易置。 When Duo lost his post, Pian replaced him; he then reviewed eastern-pass generals appointed by Duo and Tian and replaced them all.

贊曰：盧攜之敗王鐸，私高駢，賊遂卷鹹、鎬而西，易若舉毛，可謂朝無人焉。 The appraisal says: Lu Xie's undoing of Wang Duo and private favoring of Gao Pian let the rebels sweep through Xian and Hao westward as easily as lifting a hair—the court had no one fit for the task.
