吳王怪而問之，曰：「寡人獲先人之功，寄於眾賢之上，夙興夜寐，未嘗敢怠也。 The king of Wu, puzzled, demanded an explanation: "I inherited my ancestors' achievement and rule over a host of worthy men. I rise before dawn and retire late; I have never dared slacken.

吳王曰：「可以談矣，寡人將竦意而覽焉。」 The king said, "You may speak. I am listening with full attention."

吳王曰：「何為其然也？ The king asked, "Why should that be?

於是吳王懼然易容，捐薦去幾，危坐而聽。 The king of Wu blanched, pushed away his cushion and side table, straightened his back, and listened.
