久之，兩人深相結，凡條上新政皆聯銜，而鄂撫譚繼洵反不與。 In time the two became deeply allied; every memorial setting out new policies bore both their names, while Hubei governor Tan Jixun, by contrast, did not participate.

父繼洵，湖北巡撫。 His father Tan Jixun was Governor of Hubei.

繼洵素謹飭，以是頗見惡。 Jixun was stern and proper by nature, and for this Sitong was much disliked by him.
