真君初，縣令黃宣在任喪亡，宣單貧無期親，文德祖父苗以家財殯葬，持服三年，奉養宣妻二十餘載。 Early in the Zhenjun period the county magistrate Huang Xuan died in office. Xuan was poor and without near kin. Wende's grandfather Miao buried him at his own expense, wore mourning for three years, and supported Xuan's wife for more than twenty years.

自苗逮文德，刺史守令卒官者，制服送之。 From Miao down through Wende, whenever a provincial inspector or county magistrate died in office, the family wore mourning and saw the body off.
