時齊豫章王嶷爲武陵太守，雅善藹爲政，及嶷爲荊州刺史，以藹爲驃騎行參軍、領州主簿，參知州事。 Qi's Prince of Yuzhang Yi, Wuling grand administrator, prized his rule; when Yi became Jingzhou inspector, he made Ai a staff officer and head clerk, sharing provincial affairs.

嶷嘗問藹風土舊俗，城隍基啉寺，山川險易，藹隨問立對，若按圖牒，嶷益重焉。 Yi asked about custom, walls, temples, and passes; Ai answered as from a map, and Yi esteemed him more.

州人嫉之，或譖藹廨門如市，嶷遣覘之，方見藹閉閣讀書。 Envious men said his gate was a market; Yi watched and found him reading behind closed doors.

嶷還都，以藹爲太尉刑獄參軍，典書記，遷枝江令。 Yi returned to court; Ai became Grand Marshal punitive staff officer, ran the secretariat, then Zhijiang magistrate.

九年，豫章王嶷薨，藹解官赴喪，率荊、湘二州故吏，建碑墓所。 In year nine Prince Yi died; Ai mourned, led old Jing and Xiang clerks, and raised a tomb stele.

沈攸之難起，太祖入朝堂，豫章王嶷代守東府，使淵領軍屯司徒左府，分備京邑。 When Shen Youzhi rose, the Founder went into the hall of court; Prince of Yuzhang Yi held the eastern headquarters in his place and set Yuan at the head of troops encamped at the minister of public works' left quarters, dividing the capital for defense.

袁粲據石頭，豫章王嶷夜登西門遙呼淵，淵驚起，率軍赴難，先至石頭焚門攻戰。 Yuan Can held Stone citadel; Prince of Yuzhang Yi climbed the western gate at night and hailed Yuan from afar; Yuan started up in alarm, led his host to the crisis, and was first at Stone citadel—burning the gate and fighting through.

建元元年，遷侍中，出爲臨川王平西長史、冠軍將軍、長沙內史、行湘州留事，先遣之鎮，旣而驃騎豫章王嶷領湘州，以謐爲長史，將軍、內史、知州留事如故。 In the first year of Jianyuan he was moved to attendant, then went out as chief clerk on Prince of Linchuan's western-campaign staff, general who commands champions, interior administrator of Changsha, and acting head of Xiang while remaining in the province. He was sent to the command first; soon after, Prince of Yuzhang Yi took Xiang, and Mi was made his chief clerk, with general, interior administrator, and charge of the province while remaining unchanged.

時世祖不豫，謐詣豫章王嶷請閒曰：「至尊非起疾，東宮又非才，公今欲作何計？」 At the time Shizu was unwell; Mi went to Prince of Yuzhang Yi and asked for a private word, saying: "The Supreme One is not recovering from his illness, and the eastern-palace heir lacks talent—what plan do you intend now?"

徙爲安成王冠軍司馬，轉豫章王司空諮議，太守如故。 He was shifted to champion aide for the Prince of Ancheng, then to staff adviser to the Prince of Yuzhang as Minister of Works, with his prefecture unchanged.

豫章王於東府乘飛東迎，具白上怒之意。 The Prince of Yuzhang came out from the Eastern Mansion on Flying East to meet him and told him plainly how furious the throne was.

世祖轉爲豫章王太尉諮議，太守如故。 Shizu transferred him to staff adviser under the Prince of Yuzhang as Grand Commandant; his prefecture was unchanged.
