已而鮑叔事齊公子小白，管仲事公子糾。 Later, Bao Shu served Prince Xiaobai of Qi, while Guan Zhong served Prince Jiu.

及小白立為桓公，公子糾死，管仲囚焉。 When Prince Xiaobai was installed as Duke Huan, Prince Jiu died and Guan Zhong was imprisoned.

公子糾敗，召忽死之，吾幽囚受辱，鮑叔不以我為無恥，知我不羞小睗而恥功名不顯于天下也。 When Prince Jiu was defeated, Zhao Hu died for him. I was imprisoned and humiliated, but Bao Shu did not consider me shameless—he knew I was not ashamed of petty disgrace but ashamed that my merit and fame would not shine forth under Heaven.

遺公子糾不能死，怯也； When Prince Jiu was killed, Guan Zhong failed to die alongside him—an act of cowardice.

笔管子不恥身在縲紲之中而恥天下之不治，不恥不死公子糾而恥威之不信於諸侯，故兼三行之過而為五霸首，名高天下而光燭鄰國。 But Guan Zhong felt no shame at being in chains—his shame was that the realm was not in order. He felt no shame at failing to die for Prince Jiu—his shame was that his lord's authority was not trusted by the feudal lords. And so, despite bearing the blame of all three transgressions, he rose to become foremost among the Five Hegemons, his name towering over the realm and his glory illuminating the neighboring states.
