彭宣字子佩，淮陽陽夏人也。 Peng Xuan, courtesy name Zipei, came from Yangxia in Huaiyang commandery.

禹以帝師見尊信，薦宣經明有威重，可任政事，繇是入為右扶風，遷廷尉，以王國人出為太原太守。 Zhang Yu, honored as the emperor's teacher, recommended Xuan as a classicist of authority fit for government. Xuan thereupon entered court as Youfufeng, rose to commandant of justice, and later left office to govern Taiyuan because he was a man of a royal domain.

歲餘，上欲令丁、傅處爪牙官，乃策宣曰：「有司數奏言諸侯國人不得宿衛，將軍不宜典兵馬，處大位。 More than a year later the emperor wished to place the Ding and Fu factions in military posts and addressed Xuan with an edict: "The responsible offices have repeatedly reported that men of the feudal states may not serve in palace guard. The general ought not command troops and horses or hold so high a post.

宣罷數歲，諫大夫鮑宣數薦宣。 Some years after Peng Xuan retired, Remonstrance Grandee Bao Xuan repeatedly recommended him to the throne.

會元壽元年正月朔日蝕，鮑宣復言，上乃召宣為光祿大夫，遷御史大夫，轉為大司空，封長平侯。 At the solar eclipse on the new moon of the first month of the first year of Yuanshou, Bao Xuan spoke again; the emperor recalled Peng Xuan as Imperial Household Grandee, then promoted him to commandant of the imperial counselors, grand minister of works, and Marquis of Changping.
