以拔貢考銓藍田教諭，未任，遭父喪，貧甚，為書記以養母。 He qualified through the tribute-student channel for the post of director of studies at Lantian, but before he could assume it his father died. Penniless, he took work as a clerk to support his mother.

四十八年，丁母憂，即家擢兵部尚書。 In 1783, while mourning his mother at home, he was promoted to minister of war.
