父歿，或勸之仕，對曰：「若不知母氏以我為命耶？ When his father died, some urged him to take office. He replied: "Do you not know that my mother lives for me alone?

晚年，匿跡惟恐不深，先後巡撫王恕、彭禮咸禮敬之，欲留幕下，並以母老辭。 In his later years he hid his tracks, fearing they were not deep enough. The surveillance commissioners Wang Shu and Peng Li in succession treated him with ritual respect and wished to keep him on their staffs, but he declined both on the grounds that his mother was old.

周以母故，終身不遠游。 Because of his mother, Zhou never traveled far in all his life.

母年九十九而終，周亦八十矣。 His mother died at the age of ninety-nine, and Zhou was also eighty.
