八年，朝鮮與美議互市，請蒞盟，汝昌與道員馬建忠東渡監約。 In year eight of Guangxu, Korea negotiated commercial treaties with the United States and requested a Chinese representative at the signing; Ruchang and Circuit Intendant Ma Jianzhong sailed east to oversee the pact.

隨統七艦以濟，薄王京，與吳長慶及建忠謁李應罡，執以歸。 He then led seven vessels across, closed on the capital, and with Wu Changqing and Ma Jianzhong paid a visit to the Daewongun Yi Ha-eung, seized him, and escorted him back.
