陸思孝，紹興山陰樵者，性至孝。 Lu Sixiao, a woodcutter from Shanyin in Shaoxing, was profoundly filial by nature.

母老病痢，思孝醫禱久之，不效。 His elderly mother suffered from dysentery; Sixiao sought doctors and prayed for a long time, all to no avail.

思孝方欲刲股肉為糜以進，忽夢寐間怳若有神人者授以藥劑，思孝得而異之，即以奉母，其疾遂愈。 Sixiao was about to cut flesh from his thigh to make gruel for her when, in a dream, a spirit seemed to hand him a medicine; he gave it to his mother at once, and she recovered.
