父丕宗，官都勻知府，死寇難，諡壯節，傳霖其第五子也。 His father Pizong had served as prefect of Duyun and died in the turmoil of bandit raids, receiving the posthumous title Zhuangjie. Chuanlin was his fifth son.

當丕宗守都勻時，叛苗麕聚城下，傳霖方率健卒迎餉，聞警，馳還助城守，相持十閱月，援絕城陷。 While Pizong was defending Duyun, rebellious Miao gathered beneath the walls. Chuanlin was then leading picked troops to meet a supply convoy; hearing the alarm, he galloped back to help hold the city. The siege lasted ten months until supplies were cut off and the city fell.
