三年正月，賊棄武昌，蔽江東下，建瀛欲行，或謂賊鋒銳難驟當，建瀛尚輕之，檄壽春鎮總兵恩長為翼長，領標兵二千當前鋒，自率兵千餘進次九江。 In the first month of Xianfeng 3 (1853) the rebels left Wuchang and swept downriver. Jianying meant to engage them; others warned that the rebel spearhead was too sharp to meet head-on, but he still underestimated them. He appointed Shouchun garrison commander En Chang wing commander with two thousand banner troops as vanguard and advanced to Jiujiang with a little over a thousand men of his own.
於是祥厚、宿藻等疏劾建瀛棄險失機，進退無據，並及江蘇巡撫楊文定違旨去江寧，上大怒，諭曰：「陸建瀛一戰兵潰，不知收合餘燼，與向榮大軍協力攻擊； Xianghou, Suzao, and others then impeached Jianying for abandoning key positions, missing his chance, and acting without plan, and also accused Jiangsu governor Yang Wending of leaving Nanjing against orders. 疏入，詔逮建瀛治罪，命祥厚兼署總督，與霍隆武、福珠洪阿、祁宿藻悉心防禦，以在籍前廣西巡撫鄒鳴鶴熟悉賊情，命同籌辦。 When the memorial reached the throne, an edict ordered Jianying arrested and punished. Xianghou was appointed acting governor-general and, with Huo Longwu, Fu Zhu Hong'a, and Qi Suzao, charged to organize the defense. Zou Minghe, the former Guangxi governor now at home and familiar with the rebels, was ordered to assist in planning.
建瀛既被罪失眾心，宿藻獨任事，賊至，力疾登陴指揮，曆三晝夜，城大兵單，援師不至，知事不可為，在城上嘔血數升，卒。 After Jianying was punished and lost all authority, Suzao alone shouldered the work of defense. When the rebels arrived he dragged himself, though ill, onto the ramparts and directed the fighting for three days and nights. The city was vast and the garrison thin; no relief came. Seeing that all was lost, he vomited blood on the wall and died.
