夾谷衡 Jiagu Heng

夾谷衡，本名阿里不，山東西路三土猛安益打把謀克人也。 Jiagu Heng, whose original name was Alibu, came from the Santu Meng'an Yida baimouke in Shandong West Circuit.

大定十三年，創設女直進士舉，衡中第四人，補東平府教授。 In the thirteenth year of Dading, when the Jurchen jinshi examination was first instituted, Heng placed fourth and was appointed professor at Dongping Prefecture.

世宗嘗謂宰臣曰：「女直進士中才傑之士蓋亦難得，如徒單鎰、夾穀衡、尼龐古鑒，皆有用材也。」 Shizong once told his chief ministers, "Truly outstanding men among the Jurchen jinshi are hard to find, but men like Tudan Yi, Jiagu Heng, and Nipanggu Jian are all useful talent."

衡久在告，承詔始出，上見其羸瘠，複賜告一月。 Heng had long been on sick leave and came out only when he received the edict. Seeing how wasted he was, the emperor granted him another month of leave.

汝之所長，衡實似之，可賜名衡。 What you excel at, the word heng truly resembles; you may be granted the name Heng.

衡曰：「若苟有利，古已行之，且用功多而所種少，複恐荒廢土田，徒勞民，無益也。」 Heng said, "If it were truly profitable, the ancients would already have practiced it. Moreover, it demands much labor for little planted ground, and I fear good farmland would be left idle while the people toiled in vain to no benefit."

衡未使而拜執政，特賜錢六千貫。 Heng had not yet gone on such a mission when he was appointed to the council, so he was specially granted six thousand strings of cash.

四年正月，就拜平章政事，封英國公。 In the first month of the fourth year he was appointed Grand Chancellor on the spot and enfeoffed as Duke of Ying.

遣使敕葬，諡曰貞獻。 Envoys were dispatched with orders governing the burial. He was given the posthumous title Zhenxian.
