十一年，副蔡啓僔主順天鄕試，拔韓菼於遺巻中，明年魁天下，文體一變。 In year 11 he served as associate examiner with Cai Qipu for the Shuntian provincial exam and picked Han Tan out of the discarded papers; Han took first place nationwide the following year, and examination prose was transformed overnight.

二十四年，召試翰詹諸臣，擢乾學第一，與侍讀韓菼、編修孫岳頒、侍講歸允肅、編修喬萊等四人並降敕褒獎賞賚。 In year 24 the Hanlin and Household corps were tested at court; Qianxue placed first, and he, Reader Han Tan, Compiler Sun Yuebin, Lecturer Gui Yunshu, and Compiler Qiao Lai all received imperial commendation and gifts.

尚書韓菼，怡師也，其姻黨繫獄，以菼故請恕，怡怒杖之。 Minister Han Tan had been his teacher. A kinsman of Tan's was in prison and asked leniency on Tan's account. Yi angrily had him beaten.
