初，義和會源出八卦教乾坎二系，聚黨直、魯間，為臨清郜生文餘孽，後稱團，專仇教。 The movement sprang from the Qian and Kan branches of the Eight Trigrams teaching, gathered followers in Zhili and Shandong, descended from Gao Shengwen of Linqing, and styled themselves militia devoted to anti-Christian violence.
