霸少學律令，喜為吏，武帝末以待詔入錢賞官，補侍郎謁者，坐同產有罪劾免。 As a youth Huang Ba studied the legal codes and wanted a bureaucratic career. Late in Emperor Wu's reign he bought an expectancy appointment, became a palace usher, then lost the post when impeached because a full brother had committed a crime.
